Dr. Mustafa Bozbuğa is a professor of “Neurosurgery,” an anatomist, and a philosopher. In the field of neurosurgery, he specializes in neuro-oncological surgery (= tumor surgery), cerebrovascular surgery (= brain vessel surgery), skull base surgery, and spinal surgery, and works as an academic and author in his fields of expertise.
Dr. Mustafa Bozbuğa began his education at Sultanahmet 44 Elementary School; after graduating from Vefa High School, he ranked highly on the ÖSS exam and was admitted to Istanbul University’s Istanbul Faculty of Medicine (Çapa), from which he graduated in 1983 with “Excellent” honors, earning the title of “Doctor of Medicine.” Subsequently:
- Medical residency: Department of Neurosurgery (Brain and Nervous System Surgery) at the Istanbul Faculty of Medicine, Istanbul University (1985–1991).
- Worked
at the Department of Neurosurgery at the University Hospital of Zurich under Prof. Dr. M. Gazi Yaşargil in the clinic, operating room, and microsurgery laboratory; “Microsurgery Training” in 1988 and 1989.
- Completed an “international fellowship” program in the fields of “Skull Base Surgery and Microneurosurgery” at the Department of Neurosurgery, George Washington University School of Medicine, Washington, DC, USA, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. L. N. Sekhar (May 1993 – May 1994).
- He completed an “international fellowship” program in the fields of “Skull Base Surgery and Microneurosurgery” under Prof. Dr. Akira Hakuba at the Department of Neurosurgery, Osaka City University School of Medicine, Osaka, Japan (June 1994 – October 1994).
Following his training abroad, Dr. Mustafa Bozbuğa continued his work in Istanbul and was appointed “Associate Professor of Neurosurgery” in 1999. After passing the required examinations, he was appointed “Founding Clinic Chief” of the 2nd Brain and Neurosurgery Clinic at Kartal Training and Research Hospital on January 15, 2001. As the founder of this clinic, Dr. Bozbuğa served in this position for nine years. During this time, his clinic successfully performed surgeries at the highest level through an extremely intensive surgical practice, established a productive academic environment, produced academic publications, and trained numerous specialists.
Dr. Bozbuğa earned his “PhD” in “Anatomy”—a fundamental scientific discipline of great importance in both the theory and practice of neurosurgery—through his “Doctoral Training in Anatomy” at the Department of Anatomy, Istanbul Faculty of Medicine, Istanbul University (1998–September 17, 2004).
After the “Professor” position at the Department of Neurosurgery, Faculty of Medicine, Trakya University, was approved (July 2007), he was appointed to the University Professorship position in January 2008 and earned the title of “Professor of Neurosurgery.”
In addition to his medical work, Dr. Mustafa Bozbuğa earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the university (2010–2014) and subsequently completed his Ph.D. in philosophy at Istanbul University’s Department of Philosophy (2014–2021). In the field of philosophy, he has focused primarily on “philosophy of medicine” and “philosophy of humanity,” and has authored eight book chapters and delivered numerous lectures in these areas.
In his professional career, he has authored four books and 36 book chapters, published over 200 international and national articles indexed in SCI, and delivered approximately 150 scientific presentations. He has participated in numerous international and national professional conferences and various scientific events. His scientific publications have been cited in over 900 scientific studies published in SCI-indexed international journals. He currently serves as an associate editor, scientific board member, and expert reviewer for numerous international and national journals. In the field of Neurosurgery, while performing all types of surgeries, his specific areas of focus include “Skull Base Surgery, Neuro-Oncology (Tumor Surgery), Neurovascular Surgery (Surgery of Brain Vessels: aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, etc.) and Spine and Spinal Cord Surgery (spinal cord tumors, vascular malformations, spinal stenosis, lumbar and cervical herniated discs, etc.), and he maintains an extensive patient archive comprising surgeries he has performed in these fields. A member of numerous national and international professional, scientific, and social associations, Dr. Bozbuğa has been listed in the annual “Who’s Who in the World” biographical directory since 1997.
He continued his work from 2012 to 2015 at Hisar Intercontinental Hospital in Istanbul as the Director of the “Center for Advanced Diagnosis and Treatment of Neurological Sciences.” From 2015 to 2018, he served as the “Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery” at MedicalPark Gaziosmanpaşa Hospital. Since February 2018, he has served as the “Founding Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery” at NPİstanbul Brain Hospital, part of the Üsküdar University Faculty of Medicine.
In addition to his studies in medicine and philosophy, Dr. Bozbuğa is interested in music, theater and cinema, literature, history and art history, painting, and architecture. He is married and has a 26-year-old son who is a “Mechatronics and Computer Engineer.”

He held this position for nine years, until October 2009.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
- He currently serves as the founding Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at NPİstanbul Brain Hospital, Faculty of Medicine, Üsküdar University.
- He served as Department Chair of the “Neurosurgery Clinic” at MedicalPark Gaziosmanpaşa Private Hospital from 2015 to 2018.
- Director of the “Advanced Diagnosis and Treatment Center for Neurological Sciences” at Hisar Intercontinental Hospital, 2010–2015.
- He retired as a “Full Professor” from the Department of Neurosurgery at Trakya University Faculty of Medicine in 2012.
- In October 2009, he stepped down from his position as “Chief of the Department of Brain and Neurosurgery” at Dr. Lütfi Kırdar Kartal Training and Research Hospital, a role he had held concurrently with his position as a University Professor.
- Following an evaluation of his application for the professorship position opened in the Department of Neurosurgery at Trakya University Faculty of Medicine, he was accepted and appointed to the position of University Professor.
- In addition, after October 19, 2006, he served as Acting Chief of the 1st Department of Neurosurgery at Dr. Lütfi Kırdar Kartal Training and Research Hospital.

After completing his doctoral qualifying exams, he prepared his dissertation titled “Characterization and Analysis of the Trans-sylvian Anterior Temporal Transcavernous Transclinoidal Transpetrosal Apex Approach” and, having successfully defended his dissertation, earned the title of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Anatomy on September 17, 2004.
- From May 21, 1993 (practically from October 1994) until January 15, 2001, he worked as a senior resident in the Department of Neurosurgery at Kartal Training and Research Hospital.
- At the Department of Neurosurgery, Osaka City University School of Medicine, Osaka, Japan, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Akira Hakuba, from June 1994 to October 1994, he worked as a fellow primarily in “Skull Base Surgery and Microneurosurgery,” participating in clinical activities and conducting laboratory work (in the microsurgery laboratory and the cadaver operating room).
- At the Department of Neurosurgery, George Washington University School of Medicine, Washington, DC, USA, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Laligam N. Sekhar, from May 1993 – May 1994, he completed a one-year international fellowship program in the fields of “Skull Base Surgery and Microsurgery,” which included clinical work as well as cadaver dissection and microsurgery laboratory work.
- He completed his military service at the 600-Bed Air Force Hospital in Etimesgut, Ankara, from October 15, 1992, to December 15, 1992.
- From October 24, 1991, when he completed his residency training, until October 15, 1992, when he began his military service, he worked as a specialist in the Department of Neurosurgery at Istanbul University’s Istanbul Faculty of Medicine.
- During his neurosurgery residency, he spent time at the University Hospital of Zurich in 1989—for the second time—at the Clinic of Prof. Dr. M. Gazi Yaşargil, with the aim of conducting clinical observations and working in the microneurosurgery laboratory.
- During his neurosurgery residency, in 1988, he spent time at the Clinic of Prof. Dr. M. Gazi Yaşargil at the University Hospital of Zurich to conduct clinical observations and work in the microsurgery laboratory.
- He completed his “Neurosurgery Residency (Brain and Nervous System Surgery Residency)” at the Department of Neurosurgery, Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine, from November 1, 1985, to October 24, 1991.
- In accordance with the “Compulsory Service Law,” he worked as a general practitioner from October 6, 1983, to October 30, 1985. During this period, he served as a health center physician, as well as Deputy Provincial Health Director and Acting Provincial Health Director at the Giresun Provincial Health Directorate.
SURGICAL EXPERIENCE
- In his neurosurgery practice, in addition to performing all types of neurosurgical procedures, he focuses specifically on “skull base surgery, neuro-oncological surgery (tumor surgery), neurovascular surgery (surgery on blood vessels of the brain and nervous system), and surgery for complex cervical pathologies.”
- At the 2nd Department of Neurosurgery at Kartal Dr. Lütfi Kırdar Training and Research Hospital, where I served as the founding clinical director from January 2001 to October 2009, approximately 8,000 surgeries were performed under my supervision.
