He was born in 1952 in Elazığ. He completed his primary and secondary education at TED Ankara University and graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 1978. He received training in the Department of Psychiatry of the same faculty and became a specialist in 1983.

completed his military service in Girne Military Hospital and his compulsory service in Manisa Mental Health and Illness Hospital. In 1987, after passing the examination, he was appointed as an assistant professor at the Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine, Anadolu University. After graduating and successfully passing another exam, he became an associate professor at the same clinic in 1990. in 1991, he was appointed head of the Department of Psychiatry at Bakırköy Mental and Neurological Diseases Hospital after passing another exam. He founded and directed the Neurosis Clinic of the hospital for 15 years. After 2006, he headed the General Psychiatry Clinic of the same hospital. During his academic and clinical leadership, he trained 191 psychiatry residents.

He provided for the training of 45 specialists in neurology and 122 specialists in general medicine to become specialists.

Between 2008 and 2011, he worked as a member of the Observation Specialisation Department at the Institute of Forensic Medicine. After his retirement in 2011, he became a professor at Uskudar University, where he continues his research and work.

He has published more than 100 papers in national and international journals and has participated and lectured in numerous national and international congresses during his professional career. He has a good command of English. He is married and has two children.

He is the founder and president of Anxiety Disorders Research and Treatment Association. He is a member of Turkish Psychiatric Association, Turkish Neuropsychiatry Association, Group Psychotherapies Association, Biological Psychiatry Association and American Psychiatric Association.

He is a member of the advisory boards of numerous scientific medical journals.

Dr. ERKMEN worked at the Kyrenia Soldiers' Hospital and later transferred to the Manisa Mental Health and Illness Hospital. In 1987, he became an assistant professor at Anadolu University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry. In 1990, he was appointed associate professor there. In 1991, he became the head of the Psychiatry Clinic Chief at Bakırköy Psychiatric Hospital. Later, he became the head of the General Psychiatry Clinic in the same hospital.

Dr. ERKEMEN was a member of the Observation Specialisation Department of the Institute of Forensic Medicine from 2008 to 2011. In 2011, he became a professor at Üsküdar University. He is currently working at NPİSTANBUL Brain Hospital.
