Pointing out the importance of setting personal New Year's goals in the first days of 2023, experts emphasize that general recommendations for everyone sometimes cause anxiety. Experts point out that instead of long lists, slogans to be determined will motivate the person more.
Üsküdar University NPISTANBUL Hospital Specialist Clinical Psychologist Özgenur Taşkın pointed out that instead of general lists recommended for everyone, one should prepare a list suitable for one's own needs.
Success goal can cause anxiety
Expert Clinical Psychologist Özgenur Taşkın said: "How about creating your own list instead of all those new year lists and big big resolutions around you? In its simplest form. If you are planning to spend a new year, which is 12 months ahead of us, 'successfully', choosing success as the first condition for yourself will make you more anxious. It may also bring with it the worry of what if I can't do it.
Inappropriate goals can create pressure
Trying to take on New Year's lists and New Year's resolutions that are suitable for others as if they were suitable for ourselves can actually cause us to feel pressure on the goals we do not want. It is a situation that is not much different from the 'neighborhood pressure' we hear a lot."
Negativities can be listed
Stating that one can make a list to cope with this anxiety, Özgenur Taşkın said, "Such a step can be motivating for everyone: The person can list the places, people and times where they feel unhappy, feel unsuccessful or know that they should stop but cannot stop themselves. They can keep this list aside as a 'reminder' for themselves. Even if that list is not read, it will support the person when it is known to be aside."
Determine slogans
Stating that slogans can be prepared instead of long lists of New Year's goals, Özgenur Taşkın gave the following advice:
"Famous brands usually have a single slogan. Even if you don't hear the name of the brand, you remember which brand it is from the slogan. Now, if we come to you, imagine that you put your feelings you want to feel in the new year in a box and determine a slogan that will remind them.
How? Say 'I want to be happy, successful and peaceful in the new year, I put them all in a box' and come up with a slogan. For example, the slogan could be 'Just do it! It could be 'Shine', it could be 'Wait'. It can be a word, but it can take you to those feelings.
Just Remember!
Slogans can be an invaluable reminder when we are in the thick of things, when a relationship is going off the rails or when we are facing challenges. Perhaps your motto can be 'Just Remember' based on this. As mental health professionals, we strongly believe in the power of words and that one can move forward as long as they believe in themselves. So what is your motto?"
