With the arrival of Ramadan, the mobility in shopping has started to increase visibly. Stating that people will buy more than they need when they go shopping on an empty stomach, Assist. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Barış Önen Ünsalver stated that shopping should be done while full and warned, "If the person needs to shop while fasting, he should go shopping by planning what to buy in advance and try not to go out of the list unless there is no necessity."

Psychiatry Specialist Assist. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Barış Önen Ünsalver from Üsküdar University NP Feneryolu Medical Center made important evaluations about the right shopping during Ramadan.

People buy more than they need on an empty stomach

"If a person goes shopping on an empty stomach, they buy more than they need. This affects not only food shopping but also other shopping" said Asst. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Barış Önen Ünsalver,

"When buying food, they may turn to high-calorie products with the dream that they will satisfy their hunger at that moment. Or they buy more than they can consume in one meal. The high variety of iftar tables may also be related to such a motivation. On the other hand, since the drop in blood sugar may impair impulse control skills, the person may have difficulty in restraining himself and may not resist instant gratification and buy products that he does not need later."

Shop when full, not on an empty stomach

Assist. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Barış Önen Ünsalver made the following suggestions:

"People can shop when they are full, not when they are hungry. If it is necessary to shop while fasting, they should go shopping by planning what they will buy in advance and try not to go beyond the list unless it is a necessity. Here, making the budget in advance and shopping with cash can have a curbing effect."

"Ramadan is a therapy opportunity"

Psychiatry Specialist Assist. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Barış Önen Ünsalver from Üsküdar University NP Feneryolu Medical Center said, "Ramadan should not be seen as a period when eating hours are limited, in fact, this month can be considered as a collective therapy opportunity for the control of all impulses and delay of pleasure in general."

"Individuals who at other times go to individual therapy to quit smoking, limit their shopping behavior or correct uncontrolled eating behavior can solve these problems more easily with the social support they receive from people who follow Ramadan customs like themselves."
