Prof. Dr. Nesrin Dilbaz, Director of Üsküdar University Addiction Application and Research Center, stated that daily unhappiness is mistaken for depression and said, "In order to be depressed, symptoms such as loss of interest, hopelessness, pessimism, decreased sleep, decreased or increased appetite, decreased self-confidence should last for two weeks."

Dilbaz, who came to Antalya for a congress, said in a statement to AA correspondent that depression will be among the disorders that cause the most loss of ability along with heart diseases in 2025.

Emphasizing that depression affects the quality of life of the person, Dilbaz said that in the fight against this problem, it is necessary to get expert help, not to break away from social life, to exercise and to share the troubles with others.

Explaining that one third of patients diagnosed with depression can return to normal in a short time with the help of a specialist, Dilbaz said that two thirds are exposed to at least 3 or 4 different treatments.

Dilbaz mentioned that the interaction of difficult life periods, grief, stress, medical conditions, changes in hormone levels and hereditary factors cause the development of depression and said:

"A small problem we encounter in daily life or hereditary factors can also cause depression. The combination of these factors can change the physiology of the brain and make it difficult to adapt to internal and external events, leading to the emergence of symptoms of depression. Depression is the most common mental illness worldwide. Especially one out of every 5 women experiences depression at some point in her life."

"Demoralization is one thing, depression is another"

Pointing out that depression is a serious mental illness, Dilbaz said:

"Daily unhappiness is mistaken for depression. Symptoms such as loss of interest, hopelessness, pessimism, decreased sleep, decreased or increased appetite, decreased self-confidence must last for two weeks to be considered depression. Depression is one thing and depression is another. There is no need for medication in the treatment of low mood. However, in the diagnosis of moderate and above depression, appropriate doses of medication should definitely be administered. In some publications that are far from scientific reality, statements such as 'there is no need for medication' are used. While cases of demoralization can be resolved with spiritual support, depressive disorders should be treated with medication under the supervision of a specialist. One should not act on hearsay information. Otherwise, your depression will seem to go away, but it will recur over time."
