There is an important relationship between skin and mind. While stress increases skin diseases such as acne, skin diseases also lead to mental problems. Pointing out that patients with acne may also face important mental illnesses, Prof. Dr. Nesrin Dilbaz warns to seek expert help when necessary.
Üsküdar University NPISTANBUL Hospital AMATEM Coordinator Prof. Dr. Nesrin Dilbaz gave important information about the relationship between skin and mind.
There is a two-way relationship between skin and mind
Prof. Dr. Nesrin Dilbaz stated that there is a two-way relationship between skin and mind and said, "Stress increases skin diseases such as acne, while skin diseases such as acne lead to depression and anxiety disorders."
Acne triggers depression
Prof. Dr. Nesrin Dilbaz gave the following information about a study conducted in England:
"In the study using the UK database, researchers followed 134 thousand 427 men and women with acne and 1 million 731 thousand 608 people without acne for 15 years. It was observed that most of the patients were under the age of 19 at the beginning of the study (Age range 7-50). During 15 years, the rate of development of major depression was determined as .5 in those with acne and .5 in those without acne. In the first year of treatment, the highest rate of depression was observed in those with acne with 63%. People with acne were female, young, non-smokers and had high economic status. They also had lower rates of obesity and alcohol use."
Acne is not only a skin problem
Üsküdar University NPISTANBUL Hospital AMATEM Coordinator Prof. Dr. Nesrin Dilbaz concluded her words as follows:
"Patients with acne do not only have a skin defect or blemish problem, this situation imposes an important mental illness and attention should be paid. Specialist help should be sought when necessary."
