Since 2010, this special day aims to raise a comprehensive social awareness about sexual health worldwide. Üsküdar University NPISTANBUL Hospital Psychiatry Specialist Dr. Ahmet Yosmaoğlu pointed out the importance of sexual health and said that sexual well-being is a part of general physical and mental well-being.
Sexual problems affect mental health
Stating that sexuality is an important part of human physiology, Psychiatry Specialist Dr. Ahmet Yosmaoğlu said, "Sexuality is not just mating for reproduction as in animals, but a social activity for pleasure. It is one of the areas where people realize themselves. Since sexual well-being is a part of general physical and mental well-being, problems in the sexual area inevitably affect mental health. Especially mood disorders such as depression, dysthymia and anxiety disorders accompany problems in the sexual sphere. Since problems in the sexual area are problems belonging to the couple as well as the individual, their existence can negatively affect the quality of the relationship."
Problems differ according to gender
Stating that problems related to sexual health differ in men and women, Psychiatry Specialist Dr. Ahmet Yosmaoğlu said the following: "As a socially disadvantaged group, women are more represented than men in the field of mental disorders. However, since sexual dysfunctions are gender-dependent disorders, the two biological genders cannot be compared in this field. In Turkey, the most common sexual dysfunctions by gender are erectile dysfunction in men and orgasmic disorders in women. Erectile dysfunctions are usually caused by factors such as life stress, monotonous sexual life and relationship problems. Anxiety about sexual performance also has a very negative effect on erection. One of the most important causes of orgasm disorder in women is the implicit myth that it is shameful for women to enjoy sex. Another important cause is sexual relationships in which foreplay is kept short or absent."
Sexual education should be provided
Stating that it is possible to reduce the problems experienced in the sexual field with sexual education, Dr. Ahmet Yosmaoğlu said, "No matter how nice it is to celebrate one day of the year as sexual health day, in order to reduce the problems experienced in the field of sexuality, it is necessary to provide sexual education to children starting from kindergarten, to provide sexual counseling services to couples before marriage, to enlighten the society about sexuality-related myths and to create a legal infrastructure for all these. This legal infrastructure includes laws that ensure gender equality and protect disadvantaged social groups."
