Shopping addiction is defined as "people trying to relieve themselves by buying something they don't need". "Prof. Dr. Nesrin Dilbaz states that shopping addiction, which is a serious disease, causes many families to break up. Dilbaz also draws attention to the similarities of this situation with gambling addiction, alcohol and drug addiction.

Üsküdar University NPISTANBUL Hospital AMATEM Coordinator Prof. Dr. Nesrin Dilbaz made important evaluations about shopping addiction.
Shopping addiction is more common in women
"What we call shopping addiction is actually people spending more money than they need in general. In other words, they buy something even though they do not need it and try to relieve themselves in this way." Prof. Dr. Nesrin Dilbaz stated that these people are called "shopaholics" among the people,
"It is usually more common in women, it doesn't matter age or race. It's like alcohol or drug addiction, even more like gambling addiction. It is a serious disease. Nowadays many families are being torn apart by it. So much so that there are long queues for shopping, and some families and mothers even forget their children while shopping, they can get so carried away. According to one study, shopping addiction is about six to ten percent in women and five percent in men. Men are more interested in electronics, cameras, cell phones and tablets. Women, on the other hand, do not differentiate much; but they do very serious shopping in this sense, which may be clothing, shoes, perfumery, etc."
Depression triggers shopping addiction
Stating that shopping addiction is very common with depression, Prof. Dr. Nesrin Dilbaz said, "We see that people who feel unhappy and feel worthless, especially in women and men, do a little more shopping." and continued her words as follows:
"In this way, it is thought that they prevent their sadness, loneliness, anger and negative emotions by buying. If you remember, there are shops that sell a million dollars for whatever you buy. These stores are actually places where people who are shopaholics, especially shopaholics, go and buy everything from an ashtray for a man who does not smoke to a hairpin, even though they have never been useful to him; in other words, they are places opened for people who need to fulfill this need or who have such characteristics. This often leads to considerable debts and the breakdown of families and marriages. When is it recognized? Only when there are debts and too much money is spent. Because there is often an understanding in society that: "Women like to spend money". But this is different. The difference is this; for example, you see that she buys three different colors of a blouse, brings it home and may never use it. She just buys it for the sake of buying it. Or she may buy something unnecessary and get into unnecessary debt. For this reason, a serious impulse control disorder is a disease that occurs in about ten percent, mostly in women."
Decide in advance what you want to buy!
Stating that the treatment of this disease is not very difficult, Prof. Dr. Nesrin Dilbaz said, "They benefit more from therapy. Especially if it is done to suppress this lack of self-confidence, they can enter individual or group therapies," she said and concluded her words as follows:
"If they have mental illnesses, they should definitely be treated. The way to prevent buying more items than necessary from artificial discounts in this shopping is actually this: It is clear when Black Friday will be. Fifteen days before that, people should go and decide what they want to buy. For example, if you like a pair of pants, take a picture of them, get the price, wait fifteen days and then go back fifteen days later and look at the price of the same item in the same place. Only then can you control it. There is also targeted shopping here, that is, buy what you want to buy, or don't buy something because something has become cheaper because there is a seventy percent discount."
