Beware if school adaptation takes more than a week! Failure to return to routine may be a sign of problems.
After the two-week semester break, children may take a week to adapt to school. It is possible for sleep, nutrition and study patterns to become routine with some precautions to be taken. According to experts, prolonging this process may be a sign of unresolved problems. Children with separation anxiety, social phobia, attention deficit and learning difficulties may have difficulty getting away from home and family after a long break, and may experience reluctance, fear and school phobia.
Üsküdar University NP Feneryolu Medical Center Specialist Clinical Psychologist Aynur Sayım pointed out that the new adaptation process begins with the school that starts after the two-week holiday.
A week is needed for the new order
Stating that the organism gives some physical and psychological reactions in changes in sleep, nutrition, daily activity after a routine life order, Specialist Clinical Psychologist Aynur Sayım said, "When our daily rhythm changes, it may take at least 1 week for a new order to form. In most of our children, the hours of getting up in the morning and going to bed in the evening became more flexible during this two-week vacation. Feeding times have changed. Activities changed. Therefore, creating a life discipline again can be a somewhat anxious and stressful period for the family and the child."
Relaxing activities should be done before sleep
Stating that it may be possible to reorganize the disturbed sleep pattern with some measures, Specialist Clinical Psychologist Aynur Sayım said, "The first thing to do in sleep regulation studies is to regulate the morning wake-up time. In the evening, time spent in the bedroom with calm activities instead of active activities before bedtime will be good. Reading a book, chatting, breathing exercises, relaxation exercises accompanied by light music can be useful."
Listen to these suggestions
Stating that after an irregular period, it may take a week for the lesson and school adaptation process to reach a normal rhythm, Specialist Clinical Psychologist Aynur Sayın gave the following advice to parents:
"Giving advice to the child, criticizing, comparing with other children, giving very strict punishments are not appropriate methods. It is necessary to help him/her create this order.
Making agreements with a sincere, warm approach is the best way.
Children who show resistance either have a psychiatric problem or the family's determination is weak and they cannot establish discipline.
There may be psychiatric problems such as learning difficulties, attention problems, anxiety. Seeking expert help is important for the child's development and to avoid prolonging the process.
Daily and weekly programs can be made and followed for the family and the child's life order and needs, and putting a reward or an activity at the end of the week for motivation can make the work enjoyable."
Prolonged process may be a sign of a problem
Stating that the delay in returning to routine life and the prolongation of this process may be a harbinger of a problem in the child, Specialist Clinical Psychologist Aynur Sayım said:
"If the process is prolonged, we can say that this situation is a harbinger of existing unresolved problems. One of these is the discipline problem; if the parents have difficulty in creating and maintaining discipline, if they do not have a common approach and good communication, discipline does not occur in the child. In this case, the child cannot manage himself/herself. He cannot create internal discipline. His/her ability to adapt to new situations and to organize, plan and manage his/her time does not develop. Children with separation anxiety and social phobia have difficulty in leaving home after a long time, and may experience reluctance, fear and school phobia. Children with attention deficit and learning difficulties cannot easily catch up with the rhythm they have created after the vacation."
