Weight loss misconceptions

Obesity is a chronic disease that is increasing in prevalence and is determined by Body Mass Index calculation in proportion to the increase in body fat. The most important cause of obesity is the imbalance between energy intake and energy expenditure. In addition, accompanying Genetic Effect, Diet-Content, Physical Activity Status, Basal Metabolic Rate, Thermogenesis and Environmental Factors are effective in the formation of obesity.

The World Health Organization defines obesity as 'abnormal or excessive fat storage that poses a risk to health'. When the Body Mass Index, which is the number found by dividing your weight by the square of your height in meters (kg/m2), exceeds 25 kg/m2 and your waist circumference reaches a certain number (102cm for men, 88cm for women), you need to change your diet and lifestyle. If it is over 30 kg/m2, you should definitely learn to eat healthy with a nutrition and diet specialist. Otherwise, chronic diseases such as Type 2 Diabetes and Cardiovascular Diseases will follow. Obesity is a chronic disease that can be prevented. Nutrition Counseling in Obesity at NPİstanbul Brain Hospital is completely individualized and individual nutrition programs and controls are applied after a detailed evaluation.

This program, which is also described under the title of 'Weight Loss with Psychotherapy', aims to make it easier for clients to implement their existing nutrition programs and to prevent them from gaining weight again after losing weight by changing their lifestyles and habits that lead to obesity. Individuals who apply to our hospital for Healthy and Permanent Weight Loss and whose BMI is above 25 kg/m2 are first taken into a preliminary evaluation.

In this preliminary evaluation, diet and exercise programs, treatments taken for weight loss, eating habits, eating patterns and weight loss motivation are evaluated by face-to-face interview and scale filling method, and necessary blood tests (hemogram, blood fats, blood sugar, etc.) are performed. People who are deemed suitable for the program are taken to individual therapy. These therapies are conducted in weekly 60-minute sessions with a trained and experienced psychiatrist and the program lasts for 7 weeks. While the therapies are going on, nutrition programs are prepared in the Nutrition and Diet Polyclinic and interviews continue before each therapy. After the end of the program, follow-up meetings (e.g. 1st month, 3rd month, 6th month and 1st year) are held with the client.

Individualized nutrition therapy is applied in Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder and other defined/undefined eating disorders. In some eating disorders (e.g. binge eating disorder), a weight loss program with psychotherapy can also be applied. Especially in Eating Disorders, our Nutrition and Diet Specialist conducts multidisciplinary studies together with the Psychiatrist. After the treatment of the client is completed, support is provided by continuing the controls.
A Body Mass Index of less than 20 kg/m2 is defined as normal acceptable weight, while a Body Mass Index of less than 18.5 kg/m2 is defined as underweight. Losing weight is much easier than gaining weight. Individuals who want to lose weight can lose 4-5 kg per month, while individuals who want to gain weight can gain 1-2 kg per month. If the program applied for this weight is prepared within the framework of adequate and balanced nutrition rules, the weight gain of the client will be permanent and will help to improve the quality of life. The weight gain program is also a program that requires individual and long-term attention. When necessary, our Nutrition and Diet Specialist Gizem Köse and Psychiatrist, Psychologist and multidisciplinary application is carried out together.
Acute or chronic diseases such as Type 2 Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases, Fatty Liver Disease have their own special dietary patterns. These dietary patterns are individually organized by our nutrition and diet specialist with the guidance of the doctor according to the psychiatric status, hunger-fullness and appetite of the client. Individual nutrition programs that will increase the quality of life and prevent complications are prepared for all clients, whether they are inpatients or outpatients.
