Proper nutrition is of great importance in Multiple Sclerosis, which occurs when the immune system damages the nervous system and causes loss of sensation and strength. Neurology Specialist Prof. Dr. Sultan Tarlacı made important evaluations about daily nutrition and things to be considered in MS.

Üsküdar University NPISTANBUL Hospital Neurology Specialist Prof. Dr. Sultan Tarlacı gave important information about proper nutrition and things to be considered in MS.

How should caffeine be used?

Stating that caffeine-containing products increase irritability, insomnia and urinary frequency, Prof. Dr. Sultan Tarlacı said, "There is no harm in taking coffee containing caffeine. It should not exceed 3 units daily. For example; '1 Coffee + 1 Tea + 1 Cola = 3'" and gave the following information:

"Cookies and Seeds: Cookies and seeds are a source of natural oils as well as essential fatty acids. For this purpose, nuts can be used directly or their paste can be used (hazelnut, peanut butter). 1 spoon of peanut butter or 10 peanuts / hazelnuts can be eaten daily.

Fruits It is recommended to eat 2 fruits daily. All fruits can be eaten. Fresh fruit is recommended first, but frozen fruit can also be eaten if not available.

Olives: You can eat 3 black olives or 6 green olives a day. Or 1 tablespoon of oil (5 grams) can be eaten instead.

Fish All fish can be eaten as much as desired. Fish is rich in omega fatty acids and vitamin D and MS patients should eat fish at least once a week. However, consumption of other seafood (mussels, shrimp, octopus, etc.) is not recommended."

Beware of these foods!

Prof. Dr. Sultan Tarlacı said, "Gluten-containing foods, foods that cause physical allergy or allergy tests show that they are allergic, and their relatives should be avoided."

Again, foods should be avoided if they cause any sensitivity in the intestines. People can have an allergic reaction to any food (fruit, vegetables or meat). However, these are not as common as they are to the foods listed below. These foods are the cause of 90% of food allergic reactions in humans: Milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts (walnuts, etc...), fish, shellfish, soy flour. Contrary to popular belief, food additives (with E-number) are rarely the cause of allergic reactions."

Some "E-fortified" foods

Prof. Dr. Sultan Tarlacı continued his words as follows "It can be found as an additive in daily used products. The most problematic ones among these are those containing gluten and glutamate. Monosodium glutamate, also known as MonoSodium glutamate, Vetsin, or E621, is an additive used to increase the aroma in many food products. Scientifically, this flavor is considered the fifth taste next to bitter, sweet, salty and sour. Glutamate is the main component of protein. It is naturally present in almost all protein-containing foods (meat, poultry, seafood). The amount of glutamate used in food is between 0.1% and 0.8% of the food. This is similar to the level of glutamate found naturally in conventional foods. In addition to monosodium glutamate, other fragrance enhancers (flavors) are used. Some are also of glutamate origin, such as monopotassium glutamate, calcium diglutamate, monoammonium glutamate and magnesium diglutamate. Their product code is between 'E620' and 'E629'.

Stay away from aspartame!

Aspartame is a low-calorie sweetener. If you do not add sweetener to tea but drink diet/light cola, you are taking aspartame. Aspartame is 40% converted to aspartate, which is a poison. It also breaks down into methanol (a type of alcohol) and formic acid. If you take monosodium glutamate, which is often used in foods, along with aspartame, the level of the toxicant aspartate increases many times over. These substances can cross the blood-brain barrier and directly damage the nervous system, or they can increase existing damage. For today, people with MS should not eat foods containing aspartame. Although some studies say 'there is no evidence', it is necessary to think that 'the absence of evidence cannot be proof that there is no evidence' and not to overload the body with aspartame. Although it does not trigger MS attacks, aspartame intake should be avoided due to its fatigue, weakness and numbness-enhancing properties. Aspartame has also been shown to trigger migraine headaches in some people.

Probiotics provide intestinal balance

Üsküdar University NPISTANBUL Hospital Neurology Specialist Prof. Dr. Sultan Tarlacı said, "Despite the negative effects of the absence of intestinal flora, taking beneficial bacteria (probiotic additives) through food can play a role in restoring the normal balance in the intestine and improving health. In other words, we can willingly take intestinal beneficial bacteria from outside foods and give places to our friends in the intestine."

"Beneficial bacteria are called 'probiotics'. Probiotics are living organisms that are found in certain numbers in the digestive system and are very beneficial for health as well as basic nutrition. In another definition; Probiotics are living organisms that beneficially affect the intestinal microbial balance of the user by correcting it. The word probiotic comes from the Greek root 'Pro Bio' and means 'Pro Life'. In recent years it has been referred to by many different definitions. In all cases, it is found as a bacterial product beneficial for humans."
