There are warnings from experts for those preparing for a long journey during the Eid al-Adha holiday. Emphasizing that sleep must be taken before hours-long journeys, experts warn that sudden sleep attacks can be dangerous. It is recommended to take a break every two hours.
Üsküdar University NPISTANBUL Hospital Neurology Specialist Dr. Celal Şalçini gave advice to those who will go on vacation and drivers who will make long journeys on Eid al-Adha.
Get your sleep and hit the road
Stating that the most important issue is sleep, Neurology Specialist Dr. Celal Şalçini stated that it is absolutely necessary to set off in a state of sleep and said, "It is recommended that drivers who are going on a long journey fall asleep as early as possible the night before and have a comfortable sleep. Drivers who usually strive to get on the road early are advised to get on the road after getting their sleep. A body that is not used to waking up early has trouble adapting to this situation, and although the person consciously tries to stay awake, the body's biorhythm opposes this because it is predisposed to the situation it is used to."

Beware of sudden sleep attacks!
Noting that it is dangerous to drive continuously for long hours without taking a break, Neurology Specialist Dr. Celal Şalçini said, "It may become difficult to stay awake for a long time and when doing work that requires attention, it may become difficult to stay awake and you may need sleep. The severity of sleep attacks can usually increase gradually, but sometimes they can be sudden and these are more dangerous for the driver. The fact that these attacks are very short and unnoticeable, such as a millisecond, is enough to cause an accident."
Prof. Dr. Celal Şalçini stated that stimulants such as coffee and tea are effective and recommended on the long road and said, "Especially instead of drinks such as Turkish coffee that leave grounds, coffee derivatives without grounds such as espresso are more effective drinks with high caffeine content."

Avoid overeating
Noting that the autonomic system called the parasympathetic system becomes active after a meal and especially when the stomach is very full, Dr. Celal Şalçini said, "This activity does the opposite of the system that keeps people awake and this is the reason for the lethargy experienced after a meal. To prevent this situation, it is recommended to avoid overeating and to eat small amounts of food frequently."
Take a break every two hours
Dr. Celal Şalçini also mentioned the things to be done for vehicle drivers to stay awake and said, "One of the recommendations to stay awake is to take a break every two hours and do light exercise during these breaks. In particular, stretching exercises to be performed on the waist and neck muscles and leg muscles will both relax the muscles and increase circulation. When feeling sleepy, it is recommended to take a break and sleep, even if it is short. A 15-20 minute sleep will have a serious positive effect."
