"Cluster headache", which occurs at certain times of the year and progresses in the form of attacks, affects the quality of life of the person. It is aimed to reduce the severity of pain with the treatments to be applied in cluster headache, which is unilateral, throbbing and described by patients as "they gouge behind the eyes". It is stated that smoking and alcohol use are risk factors for cluster headache, which is more common in men than women.
NPISTANBUL Hospital Neurology Specialist Dr. Celal Şalçini said that cluster headache affects the quality of life.
Stating that cluster headache is a type of headache that causes very severe pain in the form of attacks at certain times of the year, Dr. Celal Şalçini said, "The duration and frequency of pain attacks are variable. The duration and frequency of pain attacks can last from 15 minutes to 3 hours and can be seen as rarely as 8 times a day to one pain every two days."
Noting that the pain is unilateral, Dr. Celal Şalçini said, "It is throbbing and described by patients as 'gouging' behind the eyes."
May cause suicidal thoughts
Stating that redness and tearing in the eye on the side of the pain, sweating on the forehead and face, runny nose and nasal congestion, restlessness and agitation can be seen during headache, Dr. Celal Şalçini warned, "The pain can be so severe that it can drive the patient to suicide."
Smoking and alcohol are risk factors
Prof. Dr. Celal Şalçini stated that smoking and alcohol are known to be a risk factor in cluster headache, and that it is also risky to be seen in first-degree relatives.
It is more common in men
Noting that cluster headache, which is more common in men than women, can occur at any age, Dr. Celal Şalçini emphasized that it is most common between the ages of 20 and 50.
Two types of treatment are applied
Noting that there are two types of cluster headache treatment, Dr. Celal Şalçini said, "Treatments to reduce the severity and frequency of attacks during pain and preventive treatments that are started before the attack and thus prevent the attacks from coming are applied. The most commonly used method to treat the patient's pain attacks is pure oxygen inhalation in the emergency room and this treatment method is very successful."
