Üsküdar University NPISTANBUL Hospital Neurology Specialist Dr. Celal Şalçini made evaluations about the pain that occurred in individuals over the age of 65 during the quarantine days due to the pandemic.

Pain appeared, pain intensity increased

Neurology Specialist Dr. Celal Şalçini stated that many health problems have emerged, especially due to immobility, and said, "During the quarantine period due to Covid-19, pain started in some individuals over the age of 65, especially those who were immobile, and in some, the severity and frequency of existing pain increased."

Somatic pains and neuropathic pains may occur

Noting that these pains can be defined as "somatic pains" arising from muscles, bones or joints or "neuropathic pains" caused by damage to nerve cells, Dr. Celal Şalçini said, "Individuals experiencing somatic pains since the quarantine process can see orthopedics, physical therapy and algology specialists, and individuals experiencing neuropathic pain can see neurology specialists, algology and physical therapy specialists when necessary."

Stating that neuropathic pain shows symptoms in many ways, Dr. Celal Şalçini said, "These pains manifest themselves as burning, tingling, numbness, felting and are usually more pronounced at the ends of the limbs."

Beware of irregular diet and sugar consumption!

Noting that the quarantine period caused neuropathic pain to become more pronounced and increase due to inactivity, Dr. Celal Şalçini said, "In addition, irregular nutrition, excessive consumption of sugary foods and consequent weight gain during the quarantine period created a basis for neuropathic and other pains."
