Multiple Sclerosis (MS), which occurs when the immune system damages the nervous system, causes sensory and power loss. Stating that many symptoms such as numbness, tingling, decreased sensation, burning, loss of strength in the limb, aggravation, pain, visual disturbances are seen in MS, Prof. Dr. Sultan Tarlacı stated that the most common initial symptom is sensory complaints and drew attention to the fact that starting smoking before the age of 17 increases the risk of MS development.

Üsküdar University NPISTANBUL Hospital Neurology Specialist Prof. Dr. Sultan Tarlacı made important evaluations about Multiple Sclerosis (MS) disease and treatment methods.

The most common initial symptom: Sensory complaints

"Multiple Sclerosis is a disease that occurs when the immune or defense system of our body damages the nervous system (brain, spinal cord) and attacks it as foreign. Normally, our nervous system is in a hidden environment, away from the immune system. However, for reasons we cannot fully understand, our immune system, which is out of control and out of control, attacks its own nervous system and causes damage." Prof. Dr. Sultan Tarlacı said,
"Complaints and symptoms vary according to the location of the damage. The most common initial symptom of the disease is sensory complaints. Generally, it is not that I cannot feel my hand or foot, but rather numbness, tingling or tingling. Sensory symptoms occur in 50-70% of patients as instantaneous symptoms."

Pay attention to these symptoms!

Neurology Specialist Prof. Dr. Sultan Tarlacı listed the sensory symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis as follows:

- "Numbness
-Tingling
-Pins and Needles
-Diminished sensation
-Tension
-Feeling of being drugged
-Feeling of walking on sand
-Itching
-Burning
-Electration
-Sudden electric shock to the face
-It can be a sudden electric shock from the neck to the back and feet."

Power loss is the second most common symptom

Prof. Dr. Sultan Tarlacı noted that after sensory complaints, MS most frequently manifests itself with power (motor) losses and continued his words as follows
"Although symptoms related to strength or power problems are seen in 32-40% of patients at the beginning, 60% of patients suffer from power losses of varying severity over the years. This can be in the form of a direct loss of strength in a limb, or in the form of 'heaviness', 'stiffness', 'resistance' or 'pain'. Such symptoms often start in the legs.

Loss of vision occurs

Thirdly, vision loss or impairment (optic neuritis = inflammation of the optic nerve). This is the initial symptom in 20 percent of patients.

Starting smoking before the age of 17 increases the risk

In most studies, the age of onset of MS is 29-32 years. In women, the most common age of onset is 5 years earlier than in men. In the primary progressive type, the age of onset is slightly older at 35-39 years. In 5% of patients, the age of onset is below 8 years and above 70 years. In general, all diseases caused by the immune system are more common in women. This is also the case in MS. The female to male ratio is 1.77/1.00. It is approximately 2 times more common in women. While MS is less common in peasant women and men, it is more common in people with higher socio-economic status. This is true both locally in cities and globally. According to a study, starting smoking before the age of 17 increases the risk of developing MS."

It occurs with the interaction of genetic influence and environmental causes

Prof. Dr. Sultan Tarlacı noted that Multiple Sclerosis disease occurs with the interaction of genetic effects and environmental causes,
"In MS, due to environmental reasons added to genetics, deterioration and damage occurs in the myelin = fat sheath that surrounds the nerve cell extensions in the brain or spinal cord, which is the central nervous system, like the plastic around a cable wire. This is followed by complaints."

Can MS be cured?

Stating that the only treatment for new attacks is cortisone therapy, Üsküdar University NPISTANBUL Hospital Neurology Specialist Prof. Dr. Sultan Tarlacı concluded his words as follows:

"Cortisone is the most effective form of treatment applied in a patient who is understood to have an attack. Cortisone treatment was started to be used in MS attacks in the 1970s and is the holy medicine of attacks. Some of the attacks may respond very well to cortisone and return to the pre-attack state. The beneficial effect occurs in the first few days and weeks. Treatments used to reduce the frequency and severity of attacks or the damage/scars/scars left when an attack occurs in patients diagnosed with certain types of MS. In 1993, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved interferon beta-1b, the first drug that could change the course of MS. The peculiarity of these drugs is that they are used not only when there is an attack, but also continuously, regardless of whether there is an attack or not. a significant part of these drugs prevent the aggressiveness of the disease and attacks by acting as a regulator through the defense/immune system in the body. we can add a treatment that we can call complementary treatment to the three treatments we have mentioned. This treatment can be specified as diet, herbal treatments, changes in daily life patterns, exercises (yoga, relaxation exercises)."
