World Left-Handed Day is celebrated every year on August 13th all over the world under the name "Left Handers Day". Experts emphasize that there is no factor that determines whether a person is left-handed or right-handed, and that left-handedness is not a disease, nor is it associated with brain damage or disability.

Every year, August 13th is celebrated as World Left-Handed Day. Making a statement about left-handedness within the scope of World Left-Handed Day, Üsküdar University NPISTANBUL Hospital Neurology Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Barış Metin mentioned that left-handedness is a difference in brain development.

Emphasizing that there is no specific factor related to whether a person is left-handed or right-handed, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Barış Metin continued his words as follows: "10 percent of people use their left hand better. This is because the right brain is more developed in terms of the ability to use tools. In 90 percent of people, the ability to use tools is in the left brain. Therefore, they become right-handed. So far, no factor has been found to determine whether a person is left-handed or right-handed. Studies emphasize that hormone levels in the womb and various environmental factors can cause left-handedness. However, it should be noted that left-handedness is definitely not a disease and is not associated with brain damage or disability. The most fundamental difference between left-handed and right-handed brains is the language center. In right-handers, the language center is in the left brain. In left-handers, it is usually in the right brain."

There is no significant difference in intelligence between left-handers and right-handers.

Referring to the claims that left-handers are smarter or more stubborn, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Barış Metin gave information about the researches on this subject. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Barış Metin; "There are very intensive researches on the intelligence or different aspects of left-handers. Studies claiming that there are some intelligence differences in left-handed people have been published. However, large-scale studies reveal that there is no significant intelligence difference between left-handers and right-handers when they examine the general population. There are serious studies reporting that left-handers have more developed spatial abilities such as three-dimensional thinking than right-handers. However, in terms of general intelligence, it is wrong to generalize that left-handers are more or less intelligent."

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Barış Metin; Do not interfere with the child's hand use

Evaluating the pressures on left-handed children to use their right hand, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Barış Metin said; "In the development process, it is observed that the child starts to prefer one hand more than the other between the ages of 2-3. This preference increases with age and becomes fully established in primary school age. In this process, it is necessary not to interfere with the child's hand preference. A left-handed child may feel unsuccessful if he/she is forced to use his/her right hand all the time. This can lead to various psychological disorders. It is necessary to support the child's natural development without any pressure or direction. Left-handedness is a normal condition, it is definitely not a disease."
