Epilepsy seizures occur in different ways. Stating that some seizures such as falling to the ground, convulsions and throws in the body can be dangerous, experts underlined that water and food should not be given to the person having an epileptic seizure.

Üsküdar University NPISTANBUL Hospital Neurology Specialist Assoc. Dr. Barış Metin gave important information about what to do during an epilepsy seizure.

Stating that epilepsy seizures occur in many different ways, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Barış Metin said, "In some seizures, the person does not move much, fixed gaze and freezing behaviors are seen. However, in some seizures, there are falls, convulsions and throws in the body. These large seizures, especially those accompanied by falling and convulsions, can be dangerous. In most seizures, there is no need to take the patient to the emergency room or call 112. However, people around should know what to do."

If the patient is experiencing these, call 112 immediately!

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Barış Metin stated in which cases 112 should be called as follows:

"If the person is having a seizure for the first time in his/her life, if he/she has breathing difficulties, if he/she cannot recover after the seizure, if the seizure lasts longer than 5 minutes, if he/she injured himself/herself during the seizure, if the seizure is in water, if the person has diabetes, heart disease or pregnancy, 112 should be called immediately."

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Barış Metin explained the interventions that should be done to someone who has a major seizure (fall and convulsion) as follows:

Gently lay the person having a seizure on the floor

"When you see someone having a major seizure (falling and convulsions), first of all stay calm. If there is no need to call 112, gently lay the person down and stay with them until the seizure is over.

Remove things that can harm the person

Put something soft under the head. Remove any damaging objects around that the person may bump into or fall on.

Turn the person to the left side to facilitate breathing

You can make breathing easier by turning the person having a seizure to their left side. Remove clothes that make breathing difficult, such as ties, and things that can break, such as glasses.
Look for a warning sign on the person

Look for a medical warning sign (wristband, etc.) on the person indicating that they have a disease. Call 112 if the seizure lasts longer than 5 minutes. When the person wakes up, explain the situation to them and help them return home."

Do not do these to someone who has a seizure!

Üsküdar University NPISTANBUL Hospital Neurology Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Barış Metin listed the things that should not be done to someone who has an epilepsy seizure as follows:

- "Do not try to stop the contractions,
-Do not put anything in their mouth, this can cause damage to the jaw and teeth,
-Do not try to breathe artificially, breathing will return when the contractions are over,
-Do not give water or food until he/she is fully conscious, food given while unconscious can escape into the lungs."
