Üsküdar University NPISTANBUL Hospital Neurology Specialist Dr. Celal Şalçini pointed out the importance of intervention in sleep apnea, which reduces the quality of life.

"Sleep apnea is a condition in which breathing stops or slows down during sleep," said Dr. Celal Şalçini, adding that sleep apnea can be caused by obesity, smoking and alcohol use, overweight, short neck, genetics and many airway-related problems.

Noting that the most striking symptom is stopping breathing during sleep, Dr. Celal Şalçini said, "The patient himself does not notice this, but the person next to him may notice it. We call this witnessed apnea."

Stating that sleep apnea should be treated, Dr. Celal Şalçini warned, "Sleep apnea, if left untreated, becomes chronic and can cause both psychiatric and systemic disorders such as cerebrovascular occlusion, hypertension, heart attack, chronic lung disease, inattention, weight gain."
