A long period of education is over. On Friday, June 14, schools will go on vacation. Counting the days for report cards, 18 million students will say "Hello" to the summer vacation. How should parents evaluate the report card? Reminding that the report card is a developmental evaluation, experts point out that the report card is a warning tool that points to disruptions in the child's development process. Experts warn that "the report card should not be evaluated only by grades" and emphasize the importance of parents determining a common attitude.

Clinical Psychologist Aynur Sayım from Üsküdar University NP Feneryolu Medical Center gave important information about how the report card should be evaluated.

The report card is a warning!

Specialist Clinical Psychologist Aynur Sayım noted that the report card should be looked at as a developmental evaluation and should not be evaluated only on grades.

Aynur Sayım said the following: "In the report card, both the level of knowledge and the development process of the child should be evaluated as a whole. In the report card, there is a section on course grades and a section on developmental evaluation. This includes data on emotional and social development. The report card also provides information about the developmental processes of the child's skills such as the ability to cooperate, to express emotions, to participate in class, and to sustain a study. It is useful to look at the report card as a developmental evaluation, not just as a report of academic achievement. Both parts are very important. The report card is a warning. A poor report card shows that there is a hitch in the child's development. A bad report card is actually a warning to take precautions about the defective parts. Here, both the family and the school need to be sensitive and take measures. It is important to focus on whichever area there is a problem."

Underlying causes should be investigated...

Stating that the factors that cause poor report cards can be different, Aynur Sayım said, "If there is a problem in which area, it means that the child has problems in that area. Either he/she has a problem with attention or a problem with social adaptation. These problems need to be identified. The child may have high intelligence but lack attention. The child may not be using his/her capacity. Learning may not be taking place. First of all, we need to look at this; we have learning styles. One child's visual learning is stronger, another's auditory learning is stronger. Each child has different learning and skill capacities, and these need to be identified. The child should be given support in areas where they are inadequate."

The family's school follow-up is important...

Stating that family interest and school follow-up are also important in the success of the child, Aynur Sayım said, "If the family regularly visits the school about the child's development, they already receive signals about the underlying problems in a timely manner. Problems can be identified with the help of the guidance service. Minor problems can be solved; but if there is a situation that cannot be solved, if there is a problem with learning, attention deficit, anxiety or problems with adaptation, a specialist should definitely step in. The family needs to get support from experts here."

There is a problem; we will solve it together...

Stating that a correct communication should be established with the child or young person in case of a poor report card, Aynur Sayım emphasized that steps should be taken with the child to identify the underlying problem and said, "In this case, the conversation with the child should be as follows: 'First of all, you are important to us. I love you in any situation, don't be sad no matter what. There is a problem and we will take steps together with you for it'. The fact that the child feels that support is also a reward for the child."

It may not be laziness but attention deficit...

Stating that poor grades can be a sign of attention and concentration problems in children or young people, Aynur Sayım said:

"Sometimes this situation can be evaluated as laziness or lack of motivation and it turns out to be attention deficit. When the family applies to a psychiatrist, the psychiatrist makes an evaluation and asks for some tests. Psychologists, on the other hand, carry out some tests and examinations for the cause in the first place. If necessary, the child's intelligence level and capacity are investigated. Research such as personality analysis and attention tests are conducted. We work to find the general cause. Afterwards, studies are carried out to help us plan a solution-oriented rehabilitation program and special learning disabilities."

The treatment process involves the family and the school

Stating that the treatment process involves not only the child but also the family and the school, Aynur Sayım said that this situation increases the effect of the treatment and added: "It is necessary to approach the child in line with his/her capacity to improve his/her quality of life, to support his/her development and not to disrupt his/her educational life. It should be aimed to take this measure as soon as possible and to raise the standard."

Parents should determine a common attitude

Stating that parents should definitely determine a common attitude towards poor report cards, Aynur Sayım said, "A common approach is important. It is important that the parents make a joint decision and present it to the young person or child. Boundaries and discipline are important. Even if the mother and father are separate, the important thing is that they show a common attitude to the child. It is important for the child that they can stay in touch. When this is ensured, there is no problem; but if not, it becomes important to ensure that the child feels trust in a single approach."
