The HPV virus is a sexually transmitted infection. It is passed through contact with the vagina or external genitalia of an infected person. Many men and women who are sexually active with the HPV virus may be exposed to this infection at certain times in their lives. Condoms do not offer absolute protection because they cannot completely cover the infected area. However, it is still preferable to use condoms before every sexual intercourse. There are several types of HPV virus . Some types can cause genital warts, others can cause cancer. HPV vaccines protect against infections.
When should the HPV vaccine be given?
HPV vaccine should be administered to children between the ages of 11-12, regardless of gender. Boys who are not vaccinated on time can be vaccinated until the age of 45. There is no upper age limit for women, even if they are sexually active, they can be vaccinated at any age and the vaccine does not lose its protection. However, different cancer-causing HPV types that are in the vaccine or not can develop cancer despite vaccination. Therefore, even if the vaccine is administered, it is necessary to be under regular specialist control.
TheHPV vaccine does not have any significant side effects. Redness or swelling in the area where the injection was given, minor pain, nausea, dizziness and pain are among the common mild side effects.
How is HPV Vaccine Administered?
HPV vaccine can be administered from the age of 9, regardless of gender. Children between the ages of 9-14 are recommended 2 doses of HPV vaccine.
Between the ages of 14-26 (including 26 years), 3 doses of HPV vaccine are recommended. The dose rates of HPV vaccine may vary according to age. We can list the HPV vaccine rates as follows;
First dose HPV vaccine: It is administered at a specified date interval.
Second dose HPV vaccine: It can be administered 2 months after the first HPV vaccine.
Third dose HPV vaccine: Can be administered 6 months after the first HPV vaccine (not earlier than 3 months after the second dose).
Following new studies, it has been determined that the HPV vaccine is also effective in women between the ages of 27-45 in this age group.
