Diabetes is progressing rapidly all over the world. Unhealthy diet and sedentary life play a major role in diabetes, which is on the rise all over the world due to the new lifestyles brought by the 21st century. According to estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO), there are more than 350 million diabetics worldwide, and it is estimated that this number will double in the next 20 years.

Every year, November 14 is celebrated as "World Diabetes Day" around the world.

According to the information provided by the Turkish Diabetes Foundation, diabetes is increasing rapidly in Turkey among all European countries. Turkey ranks third in Europe in the rate of diabetes after Russia and Germany, while today about 15 percent of the adult population continues to live with diabetes.

Üsküdar University NPISTANBUL Hospital Nutrition and Diet Specialist Özden Örkçü made important evaluations about diabetes.

One third of diabetes patients are not aware of their disease!

"According to data from the Turkish Diabetes Foundation, approximately 15 percent of the adult population in Turkey today has diabetes, and this number seems to be increasing," says Nutrition and Diet Specialist Özden Örkçü,

According to estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO), there are more than 350 million diabetics worldwide and this number is expected to double in the next 20 years. Despite this rapid increase, public awareness of diabetes is very low. Even though they have diabetes, one third of people are not even aware that they have the disease. According to the awareness study conducted by the Diabetes Foundation of Turkey, the rate of people who do not have a family member with diabetes is 20-25 percent. One out of every four to five people in Turkey knows what diabetes is. The others do not even know what this disease means."

Fast food and inactivity pave the way for diabetes!

"Diabetes is increasing all over the world due to the new lifestyles brought by the 21st century," said Örkçü and listed the factors that trigger diabetes as follows:

1. "The sedentary life that comes with the developing technology, an intense and stressful lifestyle and, in direct proportion to this, the necessity of fast and quick nutrition, i.e. 'fast food' culture, unfortunately plays a major role in the increase in diabetes.

2.Turkish people are captive to technology much more quickly. They love high technology but become addicted to it faster than other countries.

3. As a society, we do not like to do sports and we do not have the habit of doing regular sports.

4. The most important thing is 'fast food'. We are not only talking about the American type of fast food. There are two types of fast food consumption in all countries in the world: One is the American type, i.e. hamburgers, chips, sausages, etc. The other is the local fast food of that country, which in Turkey means fast foods such as döner, lahmacun, wraps, etc.

Most of the foods that seem to be friendly to children trigger diabetes!

"The food industry is a major contributor to the rise in Type II diabetes worldwide. Of the foods that seem to be friendly to children, 90% of the foods that are made attractive to children with cartoon heroes and toys include foods and beverages that are very fatty, salty and caloric." Özden Örkçü stated that the main factor of Type II diabetes is overweight and continued his words as follows:

[news=diabette-blood-sugar-level-tracking-hayati-onemem-tasiyor]

"Today, children and adolescents are increasingly affected by this type of diabetes, which is directly related to changing unhealthy lifestyles. The most critical point in the fight against diabetes starts with the fact that school canteens do not serve healthy food to children. While children eat three regular healthy meals at home, they are introduced to canteens from the moment they start school. All canteens in Turkey offer 'fast food' options. Every year, millions of children are unintentionally introduced to the 'fast food' culture. Although the Ministry of Health has banned fizzy drinks in canteens, all diabetogenic foods such as bread, sausages and chips are still sold in canteens. The public should be educated that it is not possible to overcome obesity or diabetes only through sports, what it means to have a healthy and balanced diet, and that stress plays a major role in the increase in diabetes in Turkey as it does all over the world.

"Diet is the cornerstone of diabetes treatment!"

Diabetes is an autoimmune disease that causes the pancreas not to produce enough insulin or the insulin produced is destroyed by the body's defense mechanisms (type I diabetes). Typical symptoms, such as severe thirst and increased urination, usually occur suddenly and severely in type I patients, whereas the main factor in type II diabetes is overweight. However, heredity also plays a role in type II diabetes. Failure to control blood sugar levels increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, blindness, amputation of limbs and problems during pregnancy. The patient's diet should be adjusted according to gender, age, socio-economic status, body mass index (BMI), type of diabetes, insulin timing, working conditions, activity, eating habits, blood sugar profile, blood lipids and the presence of other diseases. Even moderate weight loss in overweight or obese diabetics with insulin resistance has been shown to improve insulin resistance.

How should diabetics eat?

Nutrition and Diet Specialist Özden Örkçü made the following suggestions about the nutrition of diabetic patients:

1. "Eating slowly: The glycemic index may decrease as digestion and absorption will be slower. The structure of the food and the processes applied to the food: Cooking changes the glycemic index. When fruit juice is given instead of fruit, blood glucose rises more. When cereals are consumed as flour, the glucose response is high.

2.Posa: It slows glucose absorption, prevents postprandial glucose spikes, prolongs gastric emptying time, and pulp sources such as guar gum and pectin lower blood glucose by affecting GIS hormones.

3.Water-soluble fiber (apples, grapefruit, oranges, lemons, many vegetables, oat bran, legumes): Delays gastric emptying, slows down the digestion of carbohydrates, prevents sugar spikes, regulates bowel function, prevents constipation, and helps lower high blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

4.Fats: They delay glucose absorption. Consuming 2 or more servings of fish per week is essential for n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids.

5.Use of sweeteners: Acceptable in the treatment of diabetes. However, the advantages and disadvantages of each should be known and used with these in mind.

Energy-containing sweeteners: Fructose, sucrose, Sorbitol, Mannitol, Xylitol

Energy-free sweeteners: Saccharin, Cyclamate, Aspartame, Acesulfame K."
