If your child cannot learn the concept of right-left, wears shoes backwards, confuses the concepts of before-after, yesterday-today and cannot learn sequential concepts such as days and months, pay attention! Families have important duties in dyslexia, one of the most common learning disorders in children. NPISTANBUL Hospital Child Adolescent Specialist Clinical Psychologist Leyla Arslan gave important advice to families whose children have dyslexia.
Parents should know their child well
Stating that families should definitely get to know their children well and observe them well, Leyla Arslan said, "They should learn the risk factors in their children well. For example, which risk the child carries. They should know their children well. If the child cannot harmonize with his/her friends in any way within two months after starting school, this can be manifested as an inability to adapt emotionally, or it can be seen as school phobia. The real cause of school phobia is actually dyslexia or learning disability or attention deficit. It is useful to get to know the child."
The teacher should identify the problem and act accordingly
Leyla Arslan noted that teachers also have an important role in recognizing dyslexia and said, "The child is aware that he/she has a different characteristic but may not be able to explain it. Even for us, understanding this requires different methods. The first thing the family should do is to get to know the child well. If the teacher already establishes an eye-to-eye relationship with children in the early days and communicates well, it will not be very difficult for the child to identify this problem. The teacher should act accordingly after identifying the problem."
Problems should be taken into consideration
Pointing out the importance of early diagnosis, Arslan said, "If the child has difficulty in studying, cannot read letters and numbers, misreads words, has slow reading speed, and reads by spelling, these problems can sometimes confuse families. Due to the wrong idea that the child is reluctant, the specialist may be consulted late. This can lead to a late diagnosis. It is necessary to consult a child-adolescent psychiatry specialist for diagnosis."
Attention should also be paid to the preschool period
Expert Clinical Psychologist Leyla Arslan said, "These symptoms should be taken into consideration if the preschool child cannot learn the concept of right-left, wears shoes upside down, confuses the concepts of before-after, yesterday-today, has difficulty in learning these concepts, and cannot learn sequential concepts such as days and months."
