Obesity more effective than nicotine in cancer

Providing information on the subject, Dr. Faculty Member of the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Yıldız Erdoğanoğlu gave information about the danger posed by overweight and listed the steps that can be effective in preventing cancer.

More effective than nicotine in cancer

Overeating and lack of exercise have an even greater impact on the onset and progression of cancer than nicotine consumption. Stating that the likelihood of recurrence of tumors increases with the risk of cancer in obesity, experts emphasized the importance of exercise and healthy nutrition. Üsküdar University Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Dr. Faculty Member Yıldız Erdoğanoğlu made important evaluations about the effects of obesity on cancer.

CANCER RISK INCREASES BY 90 PERCENT

"Smoking, which causes 25-30 percent of all cancer deaths, is of great importance. Until today, nicotine was considered the main risk factor for cancer. According to today's research findings; being overweight has taken the first place in terms of cancer risk factors, even surpassing smoking." said Dr. Faculty Member Yıldız Erdoğanoğlu,
obesity-shutter

"Eating too much, exercising too little and ultimately being obese has an even greater impact on the onset and progression of cancer than nicotine consumption. Overweight women are 90 percent more likely to develop cancer, which is very high. Some tumor types such as ovarian or cervical cancer, breast cancer, colon and prostate cancers also occur in overweight people."

INCREASES THE CHANCE OF TUMOR RECURRENCE

"If you are obese, you are not only at risk of developing cancer, but you also increase the likelihood of tumors recurring. Regular exercise and a balanced diet reduce the risk. It is very important that people have a strong awareness on this issue."

"Today, for some types of cancer, the risk of disease decreases over time, while for others it increases. Industrialization and welfare level of the society, nicotine use, unhealthy diet, environmental pollution or carcinogenic substances are among the risk factors. The development of cancer cannot be attributed to a single cause, but is based on a network of various factors. Genetic factors also play an important role in the development of cancer, but it is not possible to predict individual risks. By reducing the known risk factors, you can minimize your chances of developing the disease."

TO PREVENT CANCER...

Prof. Dr. Faculty Member Yıldız Erdoğanoğlu listed the things that can be done to prevent cancer as follows:

1. "Avoid being overweight. Remember that waist circumference measurement should be below 80 cm for women and 94 cm for men. If you are not successful in your weight management, seek professional support.

2. Do not smoke! If you smoke, stop as soon as possible. If you cannot do this, at least do not smoke in the presence of non-smokers.

3. Always exercise regularly. Even a half-hour walk a day will be protective for you.

4. Eat more fruit and vegetables: at least five portions a day. Eat less foods containing animal fats.

5. If you drink alcohol, limit your intake. It is best not to drink at all. If you can't do this, men should have no more than two drinks and women no more than one drink a day.

6. Avoid too intense sunlight. Children and adolescents in particular should pay attention to sun protection. Those who are prone to sunburn should pay attention to the sun throughout their lives.

7. Follow safety instructions on chemicals that can cause cancer. Follow radiation protection advice.

8. Women should be aware of cervical cancer screening.

9. Women over 50 should participate in mammography screening for early detection of breast cancer.

10. Men and women should participate in measures for early detection of colorectal cancer.

11. Participate in hepatitis B vaccination programs."
