Experts advise that "We should teach our children to make quality use of free time" and underline that children should be given the opportunity to rest and have fun.
Clinical Psychologist Aynur Sayım from Üsküdar University NP Feneryolu Medical Center gave suggestions to families on how to spend the summer vacation productively.
Sayım stated that while some families direct their children from course to course during the summer, others leave their children alone and emphasized the importance of proper time management.
Mother and father should be a guide for the child
Stating that the time spent satisfyingly will make the person happy, feel valuable and rest, Sayım said, "Of course, for the child, vacation means a more flexible period of time when he/she is free from a planned, rule-based environment for a semester and can rest. The guidance of parents should come into play on how the child will spend the vacation."
Opportunity for rest and fun should be given
Aynur Sayım said, "It is important for families to help the child make an activity plan without too much intervention, without high expectations from the child, by giving the opportunity to rest and have fun." Aynur Sayım suggested, "Of course, the friends they choose on vacation, the environments they are in should be supervised by the family, but while doing this, care should be taken without too much pressure."
A child with a bad report card should not be forced
Expert Clinical Psychologist Aynur Sayım continued her words as follows, saying that the child will not be able to achieve on vacation what he could not achieve for a year: "The best approach would be not to force the child, but to take action towards a solution. Do not expect the child to follow a strict study program during the holiday; however, if there is a situation that needs to be supported by special education, it may be appropriate to do additional work under the guidance of an educator. Except in cases that require special support, general repetition, reading books and not too challenging activities can be done. It would be useful to emphasize that giving children daily responsibilities such as tidying their rooms, brushing their teeth, and directing them to favorite activities such as sports, chess and drama will contribute to their physical and social development."
Children should be taught internal discipline
"If the child has learned to manage his/her time well, this attitude will be reflected in his/her activities and events during the holiday, how he/she spends time with his/her friends, how much time he/she spends with his/her friends and how much time he/she spends with himself/herself," Aynur Sayım said, emphasizing the importance of internal discipline gained by the child.
Reading hours should be organized on vacation
Clinical Psychologist Aynur Sayım said, "During the long holiday period, it will be useful to add short lesson repetitions and book reading hours in daily planning in order not to forget the information children have learned during the year and to prepare for the new academic year." and pointed out the efficiency of lesson repetition for children.
