What is Bonzai?

Bonzai is an artificial chemical drug that is somewhat similar to the effects of cannabis. It is known as "synthetic marijuana", "Pure THC", "Jamaican", "Spice", "Spice Gold", "Jamaican/Gold", "Spice Silver", "Genie", "Kronic" and "K2". In Turkey, it is mainly sold under the names "Bonzai" or "Jamaican". The most common commercial names in Turkey are "Bonzai Aromatic Potpourri" and "Bonzai Plant Growth Regulator".
In forensic analyses of plant mixtures used in the drug market, synthetic cannabinoids with the active ingredients JWH-018, JWH- 073, HU-210 and CP 47,497 were frequently detected. "JWH-O18 (1-naphthalenyl methanone)" is the most common active ingredient in bonsai.
Cannabis, also known as cannabis (Δ9-THC, tetrahydrocannabinol) is derived from the Indian hemp plant (Cannabis Sativa) and acts on cannabinoid receptors called CB1, CB2. The chemical structure of Bonzai, synthetic cannabinoids, is quite different from natural cannabis. They bind much more tightly to cannabinoid receptors. These substances are called "Spice", "K2" abroad and "Bonzai" or "Jamaica" in Turkey. Bonzai was used extensively in the period when it was newly introduced to the market due to its legal sale and easy accessibility on the internet, a stronger effect than cannabis, affordability, easy accessibility and not being detected in standard drug tests. However, with new methods, it can now be detected in laboratories.
New varieties are constantly being introduced to the market in order to overcome legal obstacles. However, due to their effects on the cardiovascular system and central nervous system, their use and toxicity threaten the lives of users and can be fatal.
The effects are similar to those of cannabis for a short time at first. Then the user develops some symptoms. It creates the risks of heartbeat acceleration, intoxication, numbness and paralysis.

Bonzai addiction is the use of the synthetic drug known as bonzai and the intense desire to use this synthetic drug despite the damage it causes to the person's body. Some symptoms of bonsai use are;

  • Memory loss, paranoia, mood disorders, mental fuzziness
  • Dizziness, visual and hearing disturbances
  • Loss of consciousness and temporary paralysis
  • Body aches, seizures and coma
  • Increased heart rate, rhythm disturbances, sudden increase in pulse rate, sudden drop in blood pressure (blood pressure), heart attack
  • Chest pains, shortness of breath and convulsions
  • Nausea and vomiting, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth
  • Abdominal pain and bleeding
  • Appetite disorders, hunger and dehydration
  • Metabolic problems such as increased body temperature, excessive sweating

Bonsai addiction is a treatable disease. Certain treatment modalities are adopted here. In these cases, treatment plans should be made systematically and multidisciplinary.

How is Bonsai Addiction Treated?

Bonzai is a substance that causes serious addiction in a short time. The best treatment method for bonsai addiction is to ensure that the individual never starts bonsai. As a result of quitting, people experience an intense withdrawal syndrome and a strong desire to use it again.
There are two major goals in the treatment of bonsai addiction. The first goal is to ensure complete cessation of bonsai use. The second goal is to increase functionality by collaborating with the patient to identify and treat other psychiatric disorders and to solve psychological, sociological and economic problems. Accordingly, interventions to increase the patient's problem-solving skills and the development of coping mechanisms with psycho-social stimuli that trigger substance use. In order to get rid of bonsai addiction, detoxification is applied to the patient.
It is aimed to eliminate the withdrawal symptoms that will occur after the person is hospitalized and the substance is stopped with medication.
Maintenance therapy in the treatment of bonsai addiction includes all drug treatments and psychological and social interventions to prevent the patient from starting substance use again.
