Unnecessary use of antibiotics is creating new problems in human health. While scientists state that global warming and the problem of antibiotic resistance in bacteria will be the biggest danger that humans will face in the near future, experts underline that the wrong and unnecessary use of antibiotics must be stopped.

Every year, November 18 is celebrated as "European Antibiotic Awareness Day" to raise awareness on antibiotic use.

Dr. Faculty Member Kaan Yılancıoğlu, Head of the Department of Chemical-Biological Engineering at Üsküdar University Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, made important evaluations about the use of antibiotics.

"Our children are about to live in a time when antibiotics don't work"

"After Fleming's discovery, it was a great chance for us to live in the era of prolonged human life and increased quality of life. But the same luck is about to turn into a great misfortune today due to the wrong and unnecessary use of antibiotics." Kaan Yılancıoğlu said, "Our children are about to live in a period when antibiotics are useless. Resistant bacteria that will cause the death of millions of people every year now live among us. Resistant strains, which we used to call hospital-acquired in the past, are now community-acquired, transmitted to us from our neighbors, relatives and friends."

Society must learn to be science literate

Kaan Yilancioglu said, "So what should be done? What scientists should do is clear, develop new treatments, find new drugs. So what should society do? First of all, it should support science, know the value of science, support scientists on this path, follow innovations and scientific knowledge, learn to be science literate." He continued his words as follows:

Go to the doctor when you have the flu!

Afterwards, they should pay attention to cleanliness and hygiene. They should get into the habit of hand washing and learn the correct hand washing techniques. When they go to the doctor, they should not insist on unnecessary antibiotics, they should rest at home when they are sick, if they cannot rest, they should know how to isolate themselves and wear a mask. Do not use unnecessary and wrong antibiotics. When they have a cold or flu, they should go to a doctor and do what the doctor says.

Inspections are of great importance in animal husbandry

In this context, it is also essential that livestock farmers and breeders use antibiotics in the light of the knowledge and expertise of veterinarians. It should not be forgotten that animals and humans often use common antibiotics. Even if we use the right antibiotics, the antibiotics we consume with animal meat can facilitate the emergence of resistant strains in our bodies. For this reason, inspections are also very important in animal husbandry.

Do not use wrong and unnecessary antibiotics!

Kaan Yılancıoğlu said, "The golden age of antibiotics is coming to an end, our time is limited, maybe 10 or 15 years from now, we have a big problem at our doorstep" and concluded his words as follows:

"Scientists are shouting that global warming and the problem of antibiotic resistance in bacteria will be the biggest danger that mankind will face in the near future. For this reason, we cry out at every opportunity, let's not use wrong and unnecessary antibiotics anymore, at least to prolong this process and to create time to find the necessary new treatments."
