Üsküdar University NPISTANBUL Brain Hospital Internal Medicine Specialist Asst. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayhan Levent made evaluations regarding the unconscious and widespread use of Aspirin.

Stating that Aspirin, which has recently come to the agenda with its use in the treatment of coronavirus, should be used under the control of a doctor, experts warn that it will cause stomach and intestinal bleeding in case of misuse. Noting that Aspirin has positive effects in the treatment of those infected with Covid-19, experts said, "Aspirin has no protective effect against the transmission of Covid-19."

Üsküdar University NPISTANBUL Hospital Internal Medicine Specialist Assist. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayhan Levent made evaluations regarding the unconscious and widespread use of Aspirin.

Aspirin reduces the risk of clots in patients with Covid-19

Noting that Aspirin is one of the most widely used drugs worldwide, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayhan Levent said, "Aspirin shows antiaggregant effect by inhibiting the cox-1 enzyme. In a study, Aspirin reduces vascular-related deaths by 15 percent and non-fatal vascular events by 30 percent in the high-risk group. Aspirin is recognized as the most important antithrombocytic treatment due to its well-known efficacy."

Covid-19 can cause clots

Noting that one of the main difficulties encountered in the treatment process of Covid-19 disease is the clots thrown to various parts of the body, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayhan Levent gave the following information:
"Clots can be anywhere in the vessels in the body. We are especially afraid of clots in the lungs and heart. A clot in the lung vessels can cause a disease called pulmonary embolism, which is characterized by difficulty breathing, and a clot in the heart can cause a heart attack. In addition, clots can cause blockage in the veins in the leg and cause clots in the leg veins or blockage in the brain veins and cause stroke."

Covid-19 treatment can reduce the need for intensive care

Stating that the endothelium, which forms the innermost layer of the vessel, prevents blood from clotting in the vessel by secreting certain substances, Assist. Assoc. Prof. Ayhan Levent noted that Covid-19 disease also causes an inflammatory response in the vessel by damaging the vascular endothelium. Stating that the vascular endothelium cannot activate mechanisms that prevent clotting due to the inflammatory response that develops in the vessel, Levent said that this causes clotting. Assist. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayhan Levent said, "In a study, it was observed that the use of Aspirin reduced the need for intensive care in Covid-19 patients, reduced the rate of connection to the respirator and reduced the mortality rate in the hospital."

Aspirin has no protective effect from Covid-19

Stating that aspirin should be started in low doses such as 100 mg in the treatment of Covid-19, especially in patients over the age of 50 with a history of diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, stroke, Assist. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayhan Levent said, "Aspirin may work in the treatment of those infected with Covid-19. However, Aspirin has no protective effect against the transmission of Covid-19. Therefore, Aspirin should not be used to prevent Covid-19," he warned.

Aspirin should only be taken under doctor's supervision

Stating that aspirin can cause gastric and intestinal bleeding in adult patients and fatal disease called Reye Syndrome in children, Assist. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayhan Levent stated that patients are recommended to start aspirin only under the control of a doctor.
