"Spine Health Symposium" was held at Üsküdar University on April 6, 2019. In the symposium, where many academicians who are experts in their fields took part, the topic of "instabilities" was discussed. Stating that spine problems are one of the conditions that affect the quality of life the most today, experts pointed out that spinal instabilities can cause pain and functional limitations, making it impossible to continue daily life.
Spine Health Symposium was held at Üsküdar University on Saturday, April 6, 2019. Many experts in the field came together at the symposium where the topic of "instabilities" was discussed. The opening speech of the symposium was delivered by Prof. Dr. Şefik Dursun, Dean of Üsküdar University Faculty of Health Sciences.
The symposium was chaired by Prof. Dr. Serdar Kahraman and Üsküdar University Faculty of Health Sciences Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Dr. Lecturer Yıldız Erdoğanoğlu. In the symposium chaired by Prof. Dr. Serdar Kahraman and Dr. Yıldız Erdoğanoğlu, Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, Üsküdar University Faculty of Health Sciences, sessions titled "Cervical Region Instabilities", "Lumbar Region Instabilities", "Spinopelvic Region Instabilities" and "Rehabilitation Approaches in Spinal Instabilities Other Methods" were organized.
Spinal instabilities lead to functional limitations
Prof. Dr. Faculty Member Yıldız Erdoğanoğlu gave the following information about instabilities:
"Spinal problems are one of the conditions that affect the quality of life the most today. A healthy spine has the ability to shift enough under the loads placed on it so as not to damage both the spinal cord and nerve roots. We call the disruptions in the load-bearing function of our spine due to reasons such as decreased muscle support due to sedentary life, traumas and aging 'instability'. Spinal instabilities lead to pain and functional limitations, sometimes even making it impossible to continue daily life activities."
The first goal should be spine-oriented exercise practices
Stating that the diagnosis and treatment process means time and cost as well as loss of labor force, Yıldız Erdoğanoğlu,
"For this reason, the process needs to be multi-layered, i.e. a collaborative effort between the relevant medical departments. The first goal is to return patients to their daily lives without surgical treatment as much as possible by applying special exercises for the spine, and other goals are to delay surgical treatment or shorten the recovery time of those who undergo surgical treatment. Again, appropriate physiotherapy and rehabilitation approaches should be applied according to the difference in surgical treatment method. This symposium will examine the current approaches to spinal instabilities from a multidisciplinary, multi-layered perspective. Diagnosis and treatment approaches will be conveyed to the participants in terms of both surgical and physiotherapy and rehabilitation modalities."
