Prof. Dr. Nesrin Dilbaz: Today's children are not happy with bingo

Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nesrin Dilbaz stated that today's children will never be happy with bingo, which was once played on New Year's Eve and made everyone happy, "Because they are happy with games that will increase dopamine in the brain much faster."

Prof. Dr. Nesrin Dilbaz pointed out that the fight against substance addiction is to teach young people to say no, and that the first substance used is always from the closest friend, not from a stranger as in the movies, and said that young people should be taught to protect themselves. Addressing parents, Dilbaz said, "Do not just give them advice, please listen to them very well. Help the child find himself, teach him his responsibilities and support him to develop his self-confidence."

Üsküdar University NPISTANBUL Hospital AMATEM Coordinator and Üsküdar University Addiction Application and Research Center Director Prof. Dr. Nesrin Dilbaz gave important information about substance use disorder, addiction, what to do for preventive services and advanced treatment methods in the seminar titled "What's the Harm if I'm Addicted" at Kocaeli Chamber of Commerce.

In the seminar held at Kocaeli Chamber of Commerce (KOTO) Burhan Kasım Assembly Hall, KOTO members and guidance teachers working in high schools affiliated to Kocaeli Directorate of National Education listened to Prof. Dr. Nesrin Dilbaz with interest.

Young people need to be taught to labor

Stating that addiction is a brain disease, Prof. Dr. Nesrin Dilbaz stated that the structure of the brain is disrupted in addiction and substance use, "Why do people use substances? As someone working in this field, I can say this: The main problem starts from here, when we place getting pleasure from life on instant pleasures, that is, when we place instant pleasures at the center of being happy instead of long-term peace, for example, when we say, "Let me get rich quickly, let my stomach be full immediately, let me pass the lessons without any effort", it means turning to addictive substances, which means that preventive measures for young people should start from here. It is necessary to teach young people to spend effort, to make an effort, to take pleasure when they are interested in something."

Today's children are not happy with bingo

Dilbaz explained that in the past, bingo was played on New Year's Eve, and the whole household was happy and socialized during the game, which lasted at least half an hour to 40 minutes, and said, "Now you can't make a child play bingo on New Year's Eve, because his brain is confronted with games that will increase dopamine in his brain much faster. Just as his dopamine rises to 100 when he gains power by pressing a button in front of the computer and killing someone, he does not enjoy the bingo game for 40 minutes."

Is the national lottery addictive?

Stating that the person turns to things that increase dopamine, Dilbaz said, "The faster something increases dopamine, the more addicted we become. This is the most important aspect of smoking. There is the same situation in behavioral addictions such as gambling addiction, the brain releases dopamine as it wins a reward and becomes happy. That's why the National Lottery is not addictive because after buying a ticket, you have to wait for days for it to come out."

The forebrain develops until university years

Prof. Dr. Nesrin Dilbaz noted that the primary factor in starting substance abuse is curiosity, and the age of experimentation is between 15-25, and said, "The frontal region of the brain develops until the university period, and since this region is not yet developed in young people, it does not work. There is no braking mechanism, they think that nothing will happen to me. Therefore, it is necessary to be careful during this period."

Young people do not get used to the substance from Nuri Alço

Prof. Dr. Nesrin Dilbaz stated that the only way to prevent substance addiction is to teach children to say no and to instill a sense of responsibility. The child or young person does not get the substance from Nuri Alço or the rapist Coşkun as in the movies, the substance is given to them by their closest friend. The danger is very close. That is why it is extremely important to teach the child to say no, to teach the child to protect himself/herself."

Listen to your child very well

Drawing attention to some of the symptoms of substance addiction, Prof. Dr. Nesrin Dilbaz said, "Behaviors such as stagnation, insomnia, change in the circle of friends, and constant confinement in the room may be clues to substance abuse. Mothers and fathers should listen to their children very well. They should not only give advice. They should love their children very much and show it. Some parents say that they are like friends with their child. No, you are not his friend, you are his mother and father. Help the child find himself, teach him his responsibilities and support him to develop his self-confidence."

Rehabilitation centers should give responsibility instead of comfort

Prof. Dr. Nesrin Dilbaz emphasized that the state has important duties in the fight against substance addiction and that it has carried out important studies in this regard, and said that instead of luxury and comfort in the rehabilitation centers prepared, an environment that gives responsibility to young people and enables them to meet their personal needs should be created. Stating that in a rehabilitation center opened in Ankara years ago, many comforts were provided from pianos to pools, but these did not do any good, she said, "The conditions must be realistic. I have visited many rehabilitation centers abroad, imagine a village house, children prepare their own meals. They do their own cleaning. They are responsible for the place, they come together in the evening and socialize. A similar approach should be implemented in our country."

He talked about advanced treatment practices

Prof. Dr. Nesrin Dilbaz, who also gave information about advanced treatment practices for addiction at NPISTANBUL Hospital, underlined that every part of society, from families to municipalities, has important duties in the fight against addiction. She emphasized that green areas should be increased and that the necessary things should be done for young people to spend time together.

Kocaeli Governor Hüseyin Aksoy, Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality Health and Social Services Department Head Mücahit Arslan and Kocaeli Chamber of Commerce President Necmi Bulut made the opening speeches of the seminar organized within the scope of Kocaeli Chamber of Commerce's social responsibility project.

Üsküdar University and NPISTANBUL Hospital also opened a stand at Kocaeli Chamber of Commerce where the seminar took place.
