Is your retirement and old age defense plan ready? But beware! Production should continue even in retirement...
In our society, the concepts of retirement and old age are always mentioned together and intertwined, but this new phase of life can offer brand new opportunities. Experts point out that those whose perception of life is oriented towards production will pursue the sense of achievement in retirement and old age, and say, "We should make decisions to produce before we retire. We should program our lives, take on new tasks and participate in activities."
Aziz Görkem Çetin, Specialist Clinical Psychologist from Üsküdar University NPISTANBUL Hospital, pointed out that the retirement period is a process that includes psychological and sociological dynamics and that the person may experience difficulties from time to time while adapting to the new period.
Stating that working is one of the activities that have an important place in human life, Çetin said, "While the working person continues to earn a living, he also finds the opportunity to realize himself and integrate with society. The person may think that he/she has lost his/her role and status with retirement."
OUR ONLY ROLE IS NOT ONLY WORK
Stating that the individual who identifies with work life with the retirement period suddenly finds himself in a vacuum, Çetin said, "When we think of this process pessimistically, perhaps we can say that it is like playing a role without a role. Therefore, we need to expand our social roles. Providing a role integrity with the work part allows us to get satisfaction from life in a one-way form. Psychologically healthy satisfaction can only be achieved with diversity. Therefore, we should not accept our work life as our only role. Because the roles we assign to ourselves bring with them our natural expectations. If this is a single role, we may find it difficult to meet our expectations.
Stating that preparation for the aging process and entering retirement are very important stages, Çetin listed the reasons for this as follows:
"Because it is a turning point that determines the transition from middle age to old age.
Because it is a process of physical, mental, social and economic change.
Because if this period is not entered prepared, it is difficult to adapt.
Because it must be compatible with social and financial security.
Because life satisfaction in retirement and old age is affected by factors such as age, gender, health status, economic conditions, social activities and self-actualization."
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE RETIRED HONEYMOON?
Stating that being retired is quite attractive at the beginning, but it can evolve into a process that starts to get bored in the future, Azizi Görkem Çetin said, "Our relationship with the job we have been getting up every morning for years and getting tired and worn out is being cut off and a salary is connected, this sounds quite nice. We can somehow call this a retirement honeymoon. So what will we do when the honeymoon is over? At this point, questioning begins in the individual. The individual's current rhythm and plans are changing. Even time management can be problematic in the following process. If the discourses of 'You are retired anyway', 'You have reached a certain age, what are you going to deal with those things' are circulating around, it may mean that the problems of the process are starting to increase."
RETIREMENT PREPARATION PROGRAMS SHOULD BE IMPLEMENTED
Stating that the state has a great responsibility for retirement and old age processes, Aziz Görkem Çetin, Specialist Clinical Psychologist, said: "Unfortunately, there are no preparation programs for these processes in Turkey. Having such programs provides people with the opportunity to explain the vital conditions they find themselves in and the aspects of life that cannot be changed with different inferences."
PRODUCTION SHOULD CONTINUE EVEN IN RETIREMENT!
Reminding that the concepts of retirement and old age are very intertwined in society, Çetin said, "We perceive these precious periods of our lives as the end of the road, both individually and socially. However, it is possible to create a second spring to break this process and this perception. We should program our lives and participate in new tasks and activities for life. We need to create a program for ourselves."
Stating that those whose perception of life is oriented towards producing will pursue the sense of achievement in retirement and old age, Aziz Görkem Çetin emphasized the importance of making a future plan and gave the following advice: "Maybe we should make decisions to produce, that is, to realize ourselves before we retire. Thus, when we retire, we can take it to different forms. When we prepare ourselves for the process, maybe we can call it making a retirement and old age defense plan. In this way, we can avoid the depression that comes with the problems of this period. We should already make decisions for ourselves and remember that we can retire from work, but we cannot retire from life. Every period of life is beautiful."
