Prof. Dr. Başak Ayık from NP Feneryolu Medical Center gave information about psychiatric diseases seen in childhood and adolescence and advanced methods used in the treatment of autism.

Assist. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Başak Ayık gave information about child adolescent psychiatry
The first guest of "Healthy Conversations" was Child-Adolescent Psychiatry Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Başak Ayık from NP Feneryolu Medical Center. The program, which covered the topics of "Psychiatric Diseases in Childhood and Adolescence" and "Advanced Methods in Autism Treatment", was held in two parts.
Giving detailed information about child and adolescent psychiatry in the first part, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Başak Ayık said that the difficulties experienced by young people between the ages of 0-18 in developmental, mental, cognitive, academic and social areas are the field of study. Ayık talked about the symptoms, causes and treatment methods of attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder in adolescents. Explaining the functions of the frontal region of the brain, Assist. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Başak Ayık also expressed the effects of attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder on daily life.
Learning difficulties negatively affect academic success
Providing information about specific learning disabilities such as dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyscalculia, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Başak Ayık underlined that with the start of formal education, difficulties arise in the areas of correct and fluent speaking, reading comprehension, writing and spelling, arithmetic calculation, mathematical reasoning and problem solving, which negatively affect work, school success and daily life activities. Anxiety disorders and depression in children and adolescents were among the topics covered in the first part.
Occupational therapy and TMU methods in autism
Assist. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Başak Ayık gave information about the definition, history and symptoms of autism in the second part of the program on autism. Stating that autism is mostly related to genetic factors or gene-environment interaction, Ayık stated that the head circumference of those with autism is of normal size at birth and growth occurs between 6-12 months and 3 years of age.
Assist. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Başak Ayık also listed risk factors for autism such as a sibling with autism, a psychological disorder in the family, parents being older than 40, and living in a metropolitan area, and gave information about occupational therapy and TMU (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) treatment methods initiated under the leadership of Üsküdar University Rector Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan.
