Itching: If the liver is damaged, bile salts and toxic bodies that are not secreted through the liver cause itching.
Punctate redness: A punctate rash characterized by dilation of small capillaries can be seen. These rashes usually develop on the face and trunk. If pressure is applied to these vessels, they fade and reappear when the pressure is removed. An increase in estrogen in the body is responsible for this. In liver disorders, it is due to the lack of destruction of estrogen in the liver. In addition, in liver disorders, platelet destruction occurs due to enlargement of the spleen. This causes damage to the skin lesions.
Reddening of the palm of the hand: This observation is called palmar erythema. It is caused by excess prostacyclin and occurs in 24 percent of people with liver cirrhosis.
Development of itchy nodules on the skin: They usually develop on the arms, shoulders and legs. They range in thickness from a few mm to 1 cm and are usually found in people with hepatitis C cirrhosis. When the part where the nodule is located is scratched or damaged, it is more likely to form. Therefore, nodules are more common in people with itchy skin.
Bruising on the skin: Since clotting is damaged in people with liver disease, bruising occurs on the skin at the slightest impact.
Skin differences due to the accumulation of proteins in the liver: Apart from these, in an extremely rare inherited metabolic disorder called porphyria cutanea tarda, liver-related; painful blisters, scars, skin color differences are seen. When staying in the sun, itching and rash are generally experienced in exposed areas such as hands, arms, ears, neck and face.
