Circumcision Age

It is argued that the newborn period is the most ideal period for circumcision. Circumcision not performed in this period can be performed after the age of 6.

In fact, circumcision can be performed at any age. The age of circumcision is a very general situation. The family decides the age of circumcision. The child cannot be expected to determine the age of circumcision. For this reason, it can be done at whatever age or period the family finds appropriate. But when asked which is the most appropriate age for circumcision, two answers can be given. The first is the newborn period and the second is the primary school period.

The newborn period is the 28-day period from birth, and the primary school period is the age when primary school starts, that is, 6-7 years old. The reason why these ages are preferred is that babies do not realize circumcision in the newborn period. It will ensure that this process is overcome without being noticed by the baby and at the same time, it will enable the family to overcome this process easily. The reason why it is done in primary school age, that is, at the age of 6 and later, is that the personality is established and circumcision can be explained and understood to a child at that age. A child who is aware of circumcision will not be afraid of this situation and will not experience any psychological trauma.

Why is Circumcision Usually Preferred in the Newborn Period?

We said that the most appropriate period for circumcision is the newborn period. Circumcision performed in the newborn period has many advantages. In the newborn period, the baby is not aware of the operation. This has no drawback in terms of the baby's psychology. Wounds heal more quickly in the newborn period. This shortens the healing period that will take one or two weeks. Apart from these, circumcision is generally preferred to be performed under general anesthesia. However, local anesthesia may be sufficient for circumcision in the newborn baby. Anesthetics produced in cream form do this job. Bleeding during and after circumcision in the newborn period is very rare. This is another plus side. Finally, after the circumcision performed in the newborn period, the possibility of the baby getting an infection in later ages is considerably reduced.

Can a baby be circumcised immediately after birth?

The age of circumcision is a very important issue. Circumcision immediately after the baby is born is not the right behavior. The period when the baby is ready to be circumcised and completes its development after birth is between 7-10 days. In other words, the age of circumcision is after one week in the newborn period. The most correct thing is not to circumcise the newborn before one week. The period of one month from birth is called the neonatal period, which corresponds to a 28-day period. Circumcision within 28 days is called neonatal circumcision.
