Üsküdar University NPISTANBUL Hospital Nutrition and Diet Specialist Assist. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gizem Köse said that probiotics, which are of great benefit in regulating the digestive system, are found in many foods.
Stating that our country is very prone to a diet consisting of probiotics, Assist. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gizem Köse noted that yogurt is a good source of probiotics as well as drinks such as boza and turnip. Stating that probiotics are live, friendly bacteria naturally found in foods, Assist. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gizem Köse said, "Foods containing probiotics are usually fermented foods. Fermented foods such as yogurt, kefir, vinegar, turnip, boza and tarhana are good sources of probiotics."
Pointing out that one of the most important reasons for the consumption of boza in the winter months, especially in ancient times, is to prevent constipation due to inactivity as well as being a source of energy, Assist. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gizem Köse said, "The digestion of proteins is also facilitated by the consumption of probiotic foods such as buttermilk, yogurt and turnip along with meals containing meat."
It should be consumed during seasonal transitions
Stating that probiotics should be consumed daily and regularly, especially in the spring months to maintain the balance of the immune system during seasonal transitions, Assist. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gizem Köse warned, "Regular use for 3 months is important for those who will use it in powder or tablet form."
Regulates the digestive system
Stating that the most important benefit of probiotic nutrition is the regulation of the intestinal system, Assist. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gizem Köse said, "Probiotics help regulate the digestive system. It also reduces the risk of infection, balances the body pH level, helps lower cholesterol. In addition, it has been shown to be effective in the regeneration of the liver."
Irregular digestive system affects psychology
Stating that the digestive system is one of the most important systems that affect daily life, Assist. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gizem Köse said, "Our intestines encounter many food residues during the day and may need help in the removal of chemical wastes. Bacteria in the intestines may decrease over time, especially due to intensive antibiotic use. Recent studies show that the bacteria in the intestinal structure differ in density and diversity from generation to generation."
Stating that if the digestive system does not work regularly, it can create a basis for psychiatric disorders, Assist. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gizem Köse warned, "In addition, it can even affect the cardiovascular system by indirectly affecting the circulatory system."
Continuity, not quantity, is important in probiotics
Stating that there is no exact limitation for probiotic use in terms of daily consumption, Assist. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gizem Köse stated that it is not known exactly which food contains how much probiotics and said the following:
"Since the formation of intestinal flora is completed by the age of 3, the order rather than the amount of probiotic use is important. Probiotics are live bacteria and regulate the intestinal flora. Therefore, regular use can be beneficial. Excessive use will not cause any other problems other than causing diarrhea. However, since diarrhea will lead to the destruction of bacteria in the intestine over time, the use of probiotics in dosage will be the most effective treatment."
