Autism, a neuro-developmental disorder that occurs in early childhood, is caused by differences in brain development and functioning. Üsküdar University NPISTANBUL Hospital Child - Adolescent Psychiatry Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emel Sarı Gökten said that Autism is caused by the difference in brain development and functioning and occurs in childhood.
Stating that positive progress is achieved with early diagnosis and education in autism, Gökten said, "Significant progress can be made in socialization and communication skills with appropriate education and therapies in the treatment of autism."
Autism may show different symptoms in each child
Stating that autism occurs as a result of the interaction of genetic and environmental causes, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emel Sarı Gökten draws attention to the different manifestations of autism. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emel Sarı Gökten; said the following:
"Autism symptoms sometimes start to stand out from very early months as the baby grows. At 3 months of age, symptoms such as not making eye contact, not smiling at mom, not making any sound at 6 months of age can be seen. However, not all children show the same symptoms at the same time. Sometimes they can develop like a normal child until a certain age. Usually around the age of 2 years, symptoms such as not saying the words he started to say, not reacting consistently to his name, decreased eye contact, turning around or watching things turning around start to appear.
Autism symptoms may change with age. In children whose symptoms decrease with education and therapies, problems such as retardation in social communication skills and low academic achievement in the school period begin to attract more attention. In adolescence and beyond, restlessness, anger control problems and behavioral problems may be added to the picture, making the picture more complex.
In some children, the symptoms of autism may decrease considerably with age and with the effect of education. When providing education and therapy support, each child should be evaluated with his/her own characteristics, it should be clarified in which areas he/she has problems and support should be provided to each child in the areas he/she needs. Autism is not a single clinical syndrome where a single treatment can be successful in every child."
Autism can be recognized shortly after birth!
Stating that autism can be recognized even a few months after the birth of the baby, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emel Sarı Gökten said, "The most important symptoms are; not making eye contact and not looking back when called. It is useful to consult a specialist if the baby does not respond to his mother's attention, does not make eye contact, does not make a sound after 6-7 months, seems to be in his own world, and does not react to his name even though he is 1 year old. Significant improvements can be achieved with early diagnosis and treatment in autism. Therefore, it is important to consult a doctor without wasting time as soon as the symptoms are noticed."
