Under what conditions should stomach reduction be performed?

Fenerbahçe Club staff and member Özge Şeker died as a result of an infection following a stomach reduction surgery. Weighing 78 kilograms, experts warn about "stomach reduction" operations, which came to the agenda with the death of Özge Şeker: The operation should be performed after certain conditions are met.

Üsküdar University NPISTANBUL Hospital General Surgery Specialist Assist. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Murat KOCA underlined that the operation called bariatric, obesity surgery or stomach reduction surgery can be performed if the conditions are met.

Assist. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Murat KOCA stated that bariatric surgery, which is performed in obesity and metabolic diseases if the conditions are met, is performed for the patient to lose weight or for the treatment of metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and hypertension.

Obesity surgery is performed under these conditions

Assist. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Murat KOCA listed the conditions required for obesity surgery as follows:

"The patient must be overweight. It is performed if the Body Mass Index (BMI) is above 40 kg / square meter, if the BMI is between 35-40 kg / square meter, in the presence of metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension and liver diseases, which are complications related to obesity, in case of failure in medically supervised diet and in case of psychological stability. When all of these conditions come together, bariatric surgery or metabolic surgery can be performed."

This is a team work

Noting that if the patient meets these conditions, a decision is made for surgery after a detailed examination and research by a team, Assist. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Murat KOCA said, "It is important to evaluate the patient internally, surgically and psychiatrically before the operation. It is necessary to have a detailed examination in terms of endocrine or internal medicine and to be evaluated by a psychiatrist because it is very important that the patient is psychologically stable. The patient's condition should be examined by a team including a general surgeon. According to the results of a detailed evaluation by this team, a decision should be made to perform the surgery. If these conditions are not met, it is not performed, we call these the indications for surgery. Surgery is beneficial when it meets the indications."

Preparation period for the operation is important

Noting that a preparation process is required before bariatric surgery, Assist. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Murat KOCA said, "The patient should be informed about what he will face after the surgery, how he should change his lifestyle, what to eat and drink. It is necessary to evaluate whether the patient can adapt to the next process."

Referring to the recovery process in obesity surgery, Assist. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Murat KOCA said, "If there are no complications, the patient will recover surgically in a week. However, it is important to follow the next process in obesity and metabolic surgery, which is the reason for surgery. In other words, in order to have permanent and continuous results in treatment, especially the diet program should be followed for at least one year."

Follow-up for the next year is a must

Drawing attention to the points that the patient who will undergo surgery should do and pay attention to before and after the operation, Assist. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Murat KOCA said, "Since this operation is a team and process work, the patient should adjust his whole lifestyle accordingly from the beginning of the operation to the postoperative period. He should plan his eating and drinking according to the conditions told to him. He/she should follow the diet program prepared for him/her and be under constant control. It is very important to keep the patient under control for one year after the surgery."
