Neuropsychology Unit

Neuropsychology examines the relationship between the brain and behavior. The Neuropsychology Unit employs various psychological assessment and evaluation methods related to brain functions and psychological conditions.

Psychological tests are used to understand the individual, gather concrete information about their abilities and performance, and, based on this information, identify areas where they need improvement and plan interventions in those areas.  Psychological tests help minimize error margins in career guidance, job placement, education and training, or in determining the most appropriate treatment methods by assessing an individual’s current condition.

For tests to yield meaningful and accurate results, they must be standardized, have established norms, and have undergone validity and reliability studies. Another important consideration is that these tests must be administered by psychologists who have undergone proper test training and gained experience. It is crucial to interpret test data correctly, derive meaningful insights from the results, and generate appropriate recommendations. A well-trained test specialist can evaluate the technical qualities of tests and select the one(s) that best align with the purpose and the individual, utilizing tests with the highest psychometric qualities. In the neuropsychology unit, information is continuously updated by monitoring the literature for this purpose.
Psychological tests can be broadly categorized into two groups: objective (psychometric) and subjective (projective).

Psychological tests can be broadly categorized into two groups: objective (psychometric) and subjective (projective).

In terms of content, tests can be categorized under three main headings: 1) General Intelligence, 2) Ability-Skill, 3) Personality Tests.

The administration methods of psychological tests may vary. These include paper-and-pencil tests, tests administered face-to-face by an examiner, and, increasingly today, computer-based tests.

COMPUTERIZED CLINICAL DIAGNOSTIC TESTS

Vienna Test System:

The Schuhfried Diagnostic Scales within the Vienna Test System are administered in a computer-based environment. These include Cognitive Tests that measure abilities such as perception, comprehension, understanding, reasoning, intelligence, memory, and attention.

What is the COGBAT test?

COGBAT (Cognitive Basic Assessment) is a component of the Vienna Test System. The COGBAT test battery is a computerized assessment used to determine the cognitive status of individuals with neurological and/or mental disorders.

The COGBAT test set evaluates the following three cognitive domains:

  • Attention
  • Memory
  • Executive Functions

COGBAT (Cognitive Basic Assessment): The cognitive test battery includes the following subtests.

  • TMT – L BTA - Information processing speed
  • WAF intrinsic – Alertness
  • WAF cross-modal – Divided attention
  • FGT RLVA – Figural long-term memory
  • FGT RKVA – Figural short-term memory
  • FGT LS – Total learning, figural
  • FGT RW - Correct recognition
  • TMT-L BTB - Cognitive flexibility
  • NBV - Verbal working memory
  • TOL-F - Planning ability
  • INHIB - Response Inhibition

The COGNIPLUS cognitive rehabilitation system, which includes training modules corresponding to each dimension measured in the COGBAT test battery, is used for the cognitive rehabilitation of difficulties identified through the test application.

The COGNIPLUS Rehabilitation System is a computerized training battery used for the training of cognitive functions. It includes training modules targeting functions such as attention, executive functions, memory, spatial processing, and visuomotor skills.

Before starting training, a careful assessment helps us identify strengths and areas needing improvement. Accurately identifying the areas requiring training makes the training effective and efficient. Progress made during training is evaluated not based on subjective observations, but using the parallel forms of the initial tests included in COGBAT.

Where can this test be administered?

While there are other institutions in our country that primarily use the Vienna Test System for psychotechnical assessments or clinical purposes, I can say that the COGBAT test set is the most up-to-date version of this system and that we are the first institution to implement it. What matters is not the scores obtained from any test’s measurements, but rather the clinical evaluation of the individual’s needs within a multidisciplinary approach by a team comprising specialists from neurology, psychiatry, and psychology. This approach is implemented in our hospital and outpatient clinics.

• DAUF – Sustained Attention Test (Sustained Attention Test)
• NVLT – Non-Verbal Learning Test (Non-Verbal Learning Test)

T.O.V.A. (Test of Variables of Attention Continuous Performance Test):

A computerized continuous performance test that measures attention and impulsivity. It is language-neutral. It consists of two 10.3-minute sections, totaling 21.6 minutes. It has a normative database for ages 4–80.

Applications:

  • -Assessment of attention
  • -Measuring the response to medication dosing
  • - To measure responses to different medication doses and determine the optimal dose
  • -Measuring long-term response to treatment
  • -As part of a cognitive check-up
