Joint instability, which occurs in people who are not interested in sports as well as athletes, creates a feeling of insecurity and emptiness in the joints of the person. Joint instability, which affects the quality of life, significantly affects joint control when it progresses and surgical intervention is needed.
Joint instability in the shoulder, hip and ankle was discussed at the Symposium on Functional Exercises in Pathological Conditions organized by Üsküdar University Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Department, Sports Physiotherapists Association and Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology.
Many physiotherapists and orthopedists attended the symposium held at Üsküdar University Central Campus Nermin Tarhan Conference Hall.
Üsküdar University Faculty of Health Sciences Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Department Head Prof. Dr. Defne Kaya said that joint instability is a clinical picture that makes the person feel insecurity and emptiness in the joints.
Surgical intervention is required in advanced cases
Stating that instability in athletes as well as in people who are not interested in sports creates the feeling as if they cannot control their joint during movement, Prof. Dr. Defne Kaya said the following:
"Instability, which is controlled by exercise in non-advanced cases, requires surgery in cases that seriously affect joint control in the person. After surgery, appropriate rehabilitation stages should be applied. New techniques are constantly being defined in terms of both physiotherapy rehabilitation approaches, non-surgical approaches and surgical approaches in diseases related to the musculoskeletal system. We are excitedly following the rapidly changing current approaches for joint instability treatments."
Shoulder, hip, kneecap and ankle joints were discussed
Stating that they aim to create a platform where current physiotherapy rehabilitation approaches and surgical methods in joint instabilities will be discussed at the symposium, Prof. Dr. Defne Kaya said, "The symposium focused on the shoulder, hip, kneecap and ankle joints, where instability is most common. We believe that the symposium will be very valuable especially in terms of guiding young physiotherapists and orthopedists."
The first session titled "Shoulder Instabilities" was moderated by Prof. Dr. Defne Kaya; in this session, Prof. Dr. Tahsin Beyzadeoğlu discussed "Surgical Indications and Methods" and Prof. Dr. Gül Baltacı discussed "Exercise Approaches".
Prof. Dr. Defne Kaya made a presentation titled "Exercise Approaches" in the session titled "Patellofemoral Instabilities", while Asst. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Çetin Sayaca, Faculty Member of Üsküdar University Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, participated in the session titled "Hip Instabilities" with the presentation "Functional Anatomy and Pathomechanics".
