DeepTMU method in obesity treatment

The deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (dTMU) method used in the treatment of obesity, which is an important health problem, aims to intervene in the patient's desire to eat. Stating that with this method, stimulation is given to the Insula area, which is the region of the brain that suppresses the desire for food, experts noted that thus, the desire for food is eliminated and the individual is freed from eating attacks.

While obesity is among the most important health problems in our country as well as in the world, new and advanced treatment methods are used in the fight against obesity. Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (dTMU), one of these methods, is effective in eliminating food cravings and preventing eating attacks.

Eating attacks are treated

Üsküdar University NPISTANBUL Hospital Neurology Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Barış Metin gave information about the deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (dTMU) method. Assoc. Dr. Barış Metin said the following:

"One of the treatments applied in our hospital in the treatment of obesity is deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (dTMU). In this treatment, stimulation is given to the insula area, which is the region of the brain that suppresses the desire for food, to eliminate the desire for food and to get rid of the eating attacks of the individual with obesity.

Food pictures are shown before the sessions

The dTMU/dTMS treatment consists of a total of 15 sessions spread over 3 to 5 weeks. The sessions last approximately half an hour with preparation. Before the sessions, patients are shown food pictures to trigger food cravings and then brain stimulation is given. The purpose of showing food pictures before the brain stimulation is to stimulate the brain cells responsible for food and to make the treatment more effective."

A diet program must be followed

Stating that the brain stimulation given during the sessions does not cause any dangerous side effects in people without a previously known brain disease and that the stimulations are not painful, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Barış Metin said, "During dTMU/dTMS treatment, dietitian interviews and a diet program must be applied. In a previous study on dTMU/dTMS application, it was found that patients who underwent this application lost more weight than patients who did not, and their desire to eat decreased significantly."
