Due to the recent terrorist incidents, those who prefer to spend more time at home than outside spend most of their time on the internet.
This causes people to turn to online shopping. Experts pointing out that bored people make uncontrolled online shopping also emphasize the risk of virtual gambling.
Psychiatry Specialist Assist. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Barış Önen Ünsalver from Üsküdar University NP Feneryolu Polyclinic said that a large segment of the society spends time at home instead of going out due to the impact of terrorist incidents.
Stating that while staying at home reinforces the perception of helplessness and surrender to terrorism on the one hand, on the other hand, it causes loneliness, staying away from enjoyable or developing activities, Asst. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Barış Önen Ünsalver said:
"While some may find activities to keep themselves busy at home with their family or alone, others may have difficulty in relieving their boredom. According to what we have observed from our clients in the clinic recently, another reflection of this boredom is the increase in online shopping. These applications, which can be easily accessed especially with smartphones and where it is very easy to shop once you define your credit card, distract many people."
THE "BUY" BUTTON ATTRACTS
Stating that it is easier to abandon the purchase after seeing the product while shopping in the store, Ünsalver said, "It is much easier to press the 'Buy' button in online shopping. Although it seems beneficial to continue shopping in terms of mobilizing the economy of our country, individuals may increase their stress burden even more if they get into debt without realizing it despite their own shrinking budgets."
THERE IS ALSO AN INCREASE IN ONLINE GAMBLING!
Pointing out that in addition to online shopping, online gambling rates may also increase during this period, Assist. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Barış Önen Ünsalver made the following recommendations:
"The end of terrorism will certainly prevent the increase in these problematic behaviors, but we should not forget that we may turn to such behavioral problems until terrorism is eliminated and we should protect ourselves from these harmful habits. We need to find alternative ways to relieve boredom and enjoyment. If a person has difficulty in stopping these behaviors, they should seek the support of a psychiatrist."
PSYCHIATRIC ILLNESSES CAN BE TRIGGERED
Noting that terrorism and similar environmental stress factors can accelerate the emergence of psychiatric diseases such as depression and anxiety disorders or cause a relapse of a cured picture, Asst. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Barış Önen Ünsalver said, "Rewarding online shopping, online gambling or any kind of substance use can be an effort towards the treatment of psychiatric illness. In this case, if psychiatric treatment is not initiated, the problem may become more complicated."
