Beware of burning, numbness and tingling in the feet!

Stating that diabetic foot disease is seen in 10 percent of diabetic patients, Orthopedics and Traumatology Specialist Prof. Dr. Ahmet Parmaksızoğlu made suggestions on what to do to prevent wound opening: "Do not wear shoes that squeeze your feet, hard and pointed toes, wash and care with warm water every day."

NPISTANBUL Hospital Orthopedics and Traumatology Specialist Prof. Dr. Ahmet Parmaksızoğlu emphasized the importance of nerve compression treatment by stating the processes in which diabetic foot disease occurs and the measures that can be taken.

16 percent lose their limbs

Referring to the treatment process of diabetic wounds on the foot, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Parmaksızoğlu said, "It is vital to start treatment in the first stage because the wound tends to get out of control in the later stages. An average of 16 percent of patients lose their extremities (limbs) after a diabetic wound is opened on the foot."

Nerve compression treatment is very important

Sharing information about the nerve compression treatment routinely applied abroad, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Parmaksızoğlu said, "Although nerve compression treatment is not widely applied in our country, it is very effective in the treatment of diabetic foot. After determining which nerves are pinched with a doctor's examination, the nerves can be loosened with a very simple surgery and wounds that will worsen foot health and lead to amputation can be prevented."

Attention to severe loss of sensation

Stating that the loss of sensation should be advanced for the formation of foot wounds in diabetic patients, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Parmaksızoğlu said, "In these patients, motor function stops and functions such as sweating and blood circulation begin to deteriorate. The patient mostly feels complaints such as burning, tingling and numbness in the foot. When he feels these, he should know that he has started his journey towards the period in which diabetic foot wounds will begin in the future," he warned.

Noting that there is no typical staging in the disease, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Parmaksızoğlu said, "The patient may continue with neurological complaints throughout his life, but wounds open in about -16 patients. After these wounds, the foot has to be amputated."

Attention to loss of sensation

Stating that attention should be paid to the loss of sensation in diabetics in order to prevent the development of foot wound disease, Prof. Dr. Parmaksızoğlu said, "The disease can be in the form of components with neurological complaints or vascular complaints or both together. If there are only neurological complaints, that is, if the veins and arteries are working normally, in these patients, it is determined which nerves are compressed and relaxation surgeries are performed for those nerves. It will improve the sensation of that foot," he said.

Listen to these suggestions!

Stating that lifestyle can also lead to diabetic foot disease, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Parmaksızoğlu also gave important advice on preventing the disease:

*Pay great attention to foot care,

*Do not wear shoes that hit your feet, squeeze, hard and pointed toe shoes!

*Do not apply treatments such as pedicure and callus removal yourself!

*Consult a doctor when you feel burning, numbness and tingling in the foot.
