Alzheimer's also changes personality

Alzheimer's also changes personality

According to experts, those who live without personality traits due to social and cultural pressures when they are healthy, reveal personality traits that they could not reveal in time with the disease. This situation is mostly experienced by women.

Prof. Dr. Oğuz Tanrıdağ, Head of Üsküdar University Department, NPISTANBUL Hospital Neurology Specialist, explained the effects of Alzheimer's on personality.
Emphasizing that Alzheimer's causes changes in the behavior of individuals, Prof. Dr. Oğuz Tanrıdağ stated that the patient's personality structure and past events have an impact on personality change.

Suppressed personality traits emerge

Prof. Dr. Oğuz Tanrıdağ stated that not all patients have personality change and said, "While some people do not have personality change, some people have personality change accompanied by depression, suspiciousness and aggressive behaviors. In those who live without personality traits due to social and cultural pressures, most of whom are female patients, the personality traits that they could not reveal in time with the disease emerge as personality change."

The cause of personality changes: The brain

"The reason for these changes is that the brain is an organ of behavior," said Prof. Dr. Oğuz Tanrıdağ, emphasizing that Alzheimer's is not only about forgetfulness, "As the disease progresses, the regions of the brain related to behavioral control are also affected."

An understanding relationship should be maintained with Alzheimer's patients

Prof. Dr. Oğuz Tanrıdağ noted that the patient does not do certain behaviors voluntarily because they have problems in controlling their behaviors, and that they do not even realize that they are behaving incorrectly. Prof. Dr. Oğuz Tanrıdağ stated that reminding the patient of his/her mistake in this case is useless, and underlined that an understanding relationship should be maintained.

Caregivers should be experienced

Prof. Dr. Oğuz Tanrıdağ emphasized that Alzheimer's disease care is a professional job and continued his words as follows: "Caregivers should have some health knowledge and patient care experience. If this condition cannot be fulfilled, the patient's relatives should increase their knowledge as much as possible. The nursing home option is not common in our country. This option has a negative impact on some patients."
