What is a Toxicology Laboratory?

A toxicology laboratory is a specialized medical facility used to detect the presence and amount of toxic substances, drugs and other chemicals in biological samples. These laboratories play a critical role in assessing the health status of patients, investigating cases of poisoning, detecting drug addiction and providing evidence in legal cases. Tests in toxicology laboratories are performed on blood, urine, saliva, hair and other biological samples and are of great importance for both medical and forensic purposes.

In these laboratories, various tests are performed to detect and quantify alcohol, drugs and other toxic substances. Tests such as alcohol ethyl glucronide (EtG) testing, amphetamine testing, benzoylecgonine testing, buprenorphine testing, cannabinoid testing, MDMA (ecstasy) testing, opiate morphine testing, pethidine testing, synthetic cannabinoid testing, emergency rapid toxicology testing, ketamine testing and blood alcohol level (BAC) testing are commonly performed in toxicology laboratories.

What are the Tests Performed in Toxicology Laboratories?

Some of the tests commonly performed in toxicology laboratories are as follows:

Ethyl Glucronide (EtG) Test: Used to determine alcohol consumption. Ethyl glucronide is a by-product of alcohol metabolism and remains in the body after alcohol intake. This test can detect alcohol use even days later.

Amphetamine Test: It is used to detect stimulant drugs. Amphetamines stimulate the central nervous system and increase energy and attention. This test is used to detect amphetamines and their derivatives.

Benzoylecgonine Test: Used to detect benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine. Benzoylecgonine is formed in the body after cocaine use and this test is used to detect cocaine use.

Buprenorphine Test: Used to detect opioid drugs. Buprenorphine is a drug used in the treatment of opioid addiction and this test determines the presence of buprenorphine and its metabolites.

Cannabinoid Test: Used to detect cannabis and its derivatives. Cannabinoids are the active components of cannabis and this test is used to detect cannabis use.

MDMA (Ecstasy) Test: Used for the detection of synthetic stimulants. MDMA is commonly known as ecstasy and this test determines the presence of MDMA and its derivatives.

Opiad Morphine Test: Used for the detection of morphine and other opiates. This test is used to determine the presence and quantity of morphine and other opiates.

Pethidine Test: Used for the detection of synthetic opioids. Pethidine is a synthetic opioid used for pain relief and this test detects the presence of pethidine.

Synthetic Cannabinoid Test: Used to detect synthetic cannabis derivatives. Synthetic cannabinoids are artificial versions of cannabis and this test is used to determine the presence of synthetic cannabinoids.

Tests performed in toxicology laboratories are of great importance to ensure that patients receive the right treatment, to detect drug addiction and to reach accurate results in forensic cases. If you need a drug test, you can get reliable and fast results by contacting our toxicology laboratory.
