The rhythm of music affects the driver

Music and sounds have many effects on the brain and body. Especially the rhythm of the music listened to in traffic affects the driver. Experts point out that the driver increases his/her speed in order to keep up with that tempo and say, "The brain speeds up everything and the speed of the vehicle thus increases.

There is a physical change in the person with the sound of the music, and the heart rate and breathing increase with the rhythm of the music. Calming and low tempo music should be listened to for safe driving."

Üsküdar University NPISTANBUL Hospital Psychiatry Specialist Dr. Mahir Yeşildal pointed out that sound and music, which are a part of our lives, affect the person physically.

Stating that the most powerful sound in the world is music, Yeşildal said, "Why? First, you recognize music immediately, this is called recognition. Our brain recognizes that music through recognition, that is, by using its cognitive aspect. Secondly, you immediately associate that music with something, this is called association. Especially this association is mostly with the limbic system. For example, when it is thriller music, it evokes horror movies."

SOUNDS ARE TRANSMITTED TO OUR BRAIN THROUGH SEVERAL STAGES

Psychiatry Specialist Dr. Mahir Yeşildal said, "When our ears hear a sound, our brain perceives this sound through several stages. First, it decides whether it is a sound or not, then it distinguishes whether it is a word or not, and then it distinguishes whether this word has a meaning or not."

Stating that it has been determined that dry noise, horns, shouting and shouting sounds and noises emanating from the car damage the brain, Dr. Yeşildal said, "The noise of the city, the horn sounds from minibuses and taxis are actually sounds that damage the brain. These sounds, which we are constantly exposed to in our daily lives, affect the person both physically and psychologically."

MOVING MUSIC ACCELERATES THE DRIVER

Stating that we are also affected by music behaviorally, Psychiatry Specialist Dr. Mahir Yeşildal said, "For example, various music is played in minibuses from public transportation vehicles. Some listen to moving music such as horon, arabesque music and halay from their own region. According to a study conducted on those who listen to moving music; it was not possible to keep the speed of the vehicle between 60 and 80 kilometers per hour. In order to keep up with that tempo, the driver also increases the speed of the car. The brain speeds up everything and the speed of the car increases. There is a bodily change in the person with the sound of the music, and the heart rate and breathing increase with the rhythm of the music. The more often we breathe in and out, the faster the phenomenon called metabolic alkalosis develops. There is a numbness in the hands and feet and a slight tremor."

IT IS NO COINCIDENCE THAT TAXI AND MINIBUS DRIVERS HAVE THE MOST PROBLEMS IN TRAFFIC!

Dr. Mahir Yeşildal reminded that both drivers and passengers of vehicles and public transportation vehicles experience stress and tension due to heavy traffic in big cities such as Istanbul, and said that the music listened to especially in public transportation vehicles negatively affects the drivers.

Stating that the resulting stress harms everyone, Dr. Yeşildal said: "Vehicle drivers who are on the road all day are affected much more. There, the brain is cognitively affected and damaged. Especially the drivers of public transportation vehicles work 8-10 hours a day and are only exposed to the music they listen to during that shift. I can't make a technical evaluation in terms of the quality of arabesque music, but the lyrics in arabesque music are the ones that psychologically affect and wear people down. If you constantly consciously evoke the negative side of things in your mind, you inevitably spread that negativity to the environment. Notice that the biggest problem in traffic is experienced by minibus and taxi drivers and I think that this is not a coincidence. Of course, the fact that drivers live in a city like Istanbul where traffic is heavy, stay in a chaos and work in such a stressful city, there is a negative burden that these negativities bring to the driver. But apart from these negativities, these people listen to music that will feed this emotion, making the events inextricable."

CALMING MUSIC SHOULD BE LISTENED TO

Prof. Dr. Mahir Yeşildal recommended that drivers of vehicles traveling in heavy traffic, especially drivers using public transportation, should prefer calming music, saying, "Personal tastes are very important here. They can listen to classical Turkish music, but the music should be works that will not put the driver to sleep. They can listen to instrumental music. In a very short time, the driver will realize that there are changes that he himself can notice when he goes home."

Reminding that there are many researches on music, Dr. Mahir Yeşildal explained that music affects our brain waves as it is and that it is seen very clearly especially with Quantitative EGG and Q EGG.
