Orthopedics and physiotherapy experts talked about athlete health

Üsküdar University Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Department Head Assoc. Prof. Dr. Defne Kaya said that in the content of the congress, basic sciences and clinical practical applications will be discussed and knowledge and experiences will be shared with shoulder, knee, ankle, hip and cartilage injuries, which are more common in athletes.

The Sports Traumatology and Rehabilitation Congress, organized by Üsküdar University for the third time this year, brought together orthopedics and physiotherapy specialists who are experts in their fields. In the congress titled "Orthopedist and Physiotherapist Common Perspective on Sports Injury Pathologies", sports injuries, treatment and preventive measures and sports health were discussed.
The congress, held at Üsküdar University Altunizade Campus Nermin Tarhan Conference Hall, was held with a wide participation.

Congress Organizing Committee member, Üsküdar University Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Department Head Assoc. Prof. Dr. Defne Kaya stated that she is not the president of the congress, the speakers and participants are the president of the congress and thanked them. Stating that the congress brings orthopedists and physiotherapists together, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kaya said that she expects it to be a productive congress where clinicians will share their experiences.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Defne Kaya: "Health professionals have a great job"

Stating that sports are very popular in the world and in our country, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Defne Kaya said the following about the congress: "Sports are organizations in which athletes represent their teams and countries on national and international platforms, attract the attention of societies, and provide a pleasant time for both athletes and spectators, accompanied by friendship, gentlemanliness, tolerance and competition. However, injuries are also frequently encountered in these organizations. Health professionals have a great role in the treatment of sports injuries and the return of the athlete to sports. In our congress, possible sports injuries will be examined with the common perspective of orthopedists and physiotherapists. Very valuable Orthopedists and Physiotherapists who are very experienced in their fields and who have made clinical and scientific contributions on national and international platforms have been invited to our congress. In addition, two foreign guests will share their experiences on current practices used in sports injuries."

The most common injuries will be discussed

Stating that two courses, Rehabilitation in Shoulder Instabilities and Rehabilitation in Patellar Instabilities, were organized on the first day of our Sports Traumatology and Rehabilitation Congress, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Defne Kaya said, "With these courses, it is aimed to share more detailed information about shoulder and patellar instabilities. In the content of the congress, there are sessions that we believe will be enjoyable where basic sciences and clinical practical applications will be discussed, knowledge and experiences will be shared, along with shoulder, knee, ankle, hip and cartilage injuries, which are more common in athletes."

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Defne Kaya said, "We did not forget to support our young researchers within the congress. With the 'I Have an Idea' competition, we aimed to challenge the imagination of our researchers and to reveal possible project proposals. We wish it to be a pleasant congress hosted by Üsküdar University, where academic and clinical experiences are shared and the Orthopedist-Physiotherapist cooperation is underlined again."

Prof. Dr. Haydar Sur: "Athlete health should be given importance"

Prof. Dr. Haydar Sur, Dean of Üsküdar University Faculty of Health Sciences, pointed out the importance of athlete health by stating that he played volleyball professionally during his university years and his sports life ended due to the rupture of his right shoulder ligament. Stating that as a public health specialist, this issue has always been on his mind and that he wants good things to happen in our country in this regard, Prof. Sur emphasized that the big clubs in Turkey do not give enough importance to the issue of athlete health. Prof. Dr. Haydar Sur, who served on the health committee of Beşiktaş Sports Club for two years, stated that his suggestion to provide standard health training to young athletes was not taken into consideration and said, "We prepared a training kit. I said that the Star Team, the Youth Team or whoever is transferred to the club should not be included in the team without this training, but no one opened the cover of the kit I prepared with effort. You will be the most important club in Turkey and you will not give this much importance to training. Other big clubs are no different. I think preventive health services should be given importance."

Prof. Dr. Mehmet Zelka: "Sports is of great importance in raising qualified individuals"

Üsküdar University Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Mehmet Zelka stated that the most important resource that a society can have is qualified trained human power and said, "It is never precious gold, ores, etc. These are of course part of the wealth as an element of important nature. But the most important thing is trained, qualified manpower. The higher the quality and number of this qualified manpower, the richer the potential of that society. One of the ways to gain this quality must be sports. It makes a serious contribution to people's mental and physical health as stated by our health experts."

Looking at the statistics, Zelka stated that we have 4.5 million licensed athletes and said, "We have around 710 thousand active athletes in our country. There is a great interest in sports in almost all segments of society now that awareness has increased. Sports is a popular field. With the spread of sports, unintentional injuries and traumas can occur. Prevention of these is only possible with trained and qualified professionals. Therefore, this congress will be a qualified congress that will contribute to the training of professionals." Stating that they attach great importance to such events as a university, Zelka expressed his belief that this congress will have very productive results.

After the opening speeches, the congress was held under the title of "Orthopedist and Physiotherapist Common Perspective on Sports Injury Pathologies".

Prof. Dr. Doral: "Sports surgeons and physiotherapists should work together"

Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Mahmut Nedim Doral pointed out the importance of soft tissue injuries in his presentation titled "Soft Tissue Architecture through the Eyes of a Sports Surgeon". Prof. Dr. Doral emphasized that the damage to the bone is more important in fractures and injuries and that soft tissue injuries should also be taken into consideration. Stating that it is important for sports surgeons, related branch physicians and physiotherapists to work together, Prof. Dr. Doral also emphasized the importance of communication with the athlete during the rehabilitation process.

Prof. Dr. İnci Yüksel explained the importance of the rehabilitation process

Prof. Dr. İnci Yüksel from Eastern Mediterranean University Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Department gave information about rehabilitation practices in her presentation titled "Motor Control in Sports Rehabilitation" and explained the importance of rehabilitation after treatment in sports trauma and injuries.

Athlete's Shoulder was discussed

In the session titled "Athlete's Shoulder" moderated by Prof. Dr. Mahmut Nedim Doral, Prof. Dr. Tahsin Beyzadeoğlu and Prof. Dr. Gül Baltacı participated with their presentations titled "First Shoulder Dislocation". Prof. Dr. Tahsin Beyzadeoğlu stated that they recommend surgery for the first shoulder dislocation in young athletes.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ali Erşen and Dr. Fzt. Prof. Dr. Ali Erşen and Dr. Fzt. Elif Turgut made a presentation titled "Multidirectional Instability in the Shoulder", Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kerem Canbora and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Derya Çelik made a presentation titled "Rotator Sheath Problems" and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kerem Birsel and Assoc. Prof. Dr. İrem Düzgün made a presentation titled "Biceps Pathologies".

Workshop organized

After the first session, a workshop titled "The Use of Tecar Therapy in Sports Injuries and Current Approaches" led by Ftz. Havier Gonzalaz Gorriz led the workshop titled "Use of Tecar Therapy in Sports Injuries and Current Approaches".
After the workshop, the second session titled "Knee Ligament Injuries in Athletes" moderated by Prof. Dr. Ömer Taşer was held. The session was attended by Opr. Dr. Asım Kayaalp and Uzm. Fzt. Abdulhamit Tayfur, "Isolated Inner Lateral Ligament Injuries"; Prof. Dr. Reha Tandoğan and Assoc. Dr. Baran Yosmaoğlu, "Multiple Ligament Injuries"; Prof. Dr. Egemen Turhan and Assoc. Dr. Defne Kaya, "Medial Patellofemoral Ligament Pathologies"; Prof. Dr. Ömer Taşer and Sp. Fzt. Mesut Selami participated with their presentations titled "Partial Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injuries".

Achilles Tendon Pathologies were discussed

The other session titled "Ankle Injuries in Athletes" was moderated by Prof. Dr. Reha Tandoğan. In the session, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kaan Irgıt and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hande Güney, "Achilles Tendon Pathologies"; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Barış Kocaoğlu and Prof. Dr. Nilgün Bek, "Ankle Chronic Instabilities"; Assoc. Dr. Kaya Akan and Assoc. Dr. Gürsoy Coşkun, "Sindezmosis Injuries"; Assoc. Dr. Semih Ayanoğlu and Assoc. Assist. Prof. Dr. Semih Ayanoğlu and Research Assistant Mahmut Çaluk took part with their presentations titled "Plantar Fasciitis".

Special therapeutic approaches were discussed

The session on "Special Therapeutic Approaches" was moderated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Defne Kaya, while Mon. Erdem Yörükoğlu, "Graston Technique: Prevention from Injuries and Applications after Injuries" and Spc. Mon. Görkem Dizdar, "Muscle - Energy Techniques: Prevention of Sports Injuries and Post-Injury Applications" participated in the program with their presentations.

On the first day of the Sports Traumatology and Rehabilitation Congress, two separate courses were held at Üsküdar University NP Feneryolu Medical Center.
On Saturday, March 31, 2018, on the third day of the congress, expert physiotherapists and physicians will come together with the participants with their presentations.
