Pharyngitis, which occurs with inflammation of the tissues of the pharynx, causes fever, sore throat, redness and difficulty swallowing. Air pollution, smoking, alcohol, spicy-spicy foods, etc. Stating that factors that irritate the throat cause pharyngitis, experts pointed out that constantly breathing through the mouth due to nasal congestion plays a major role in chronic pharyngitis.

Üsküdar University NPISTANBUL Hospital Otolaryngology Specialist Prof. Dr. Murat Topak made important evaluations about pharyngitis.

"The pharynx (pharynx) is a region located behind the oral cavity and behind the soft palate, through which food, liquids and air pass. During swallowing, solid and liquid foods pass from the pharynx to the esophagus and from there to the stomach," said Prof. Dr. Murat Topak,

"Pharyngitis is an inflammation of the pharyngeal tissues and is characterized by fever, sore throat, redness and difficulty swallowing. Tonsillitis can also be counted among pharyngitis. In addition to acute pharyngitis, there is also a disease picture defined as chronic pharyngitis. In chronic pharyngitis, there is no fever or malaise, but there is difficulty in swallowing, tickling cough, burning, tension, a feeling as if a foreign body is stuck, and a desire to clear the throat frequently."

If you are constantly breathing through your mouth, beware!

Stating that infection is also a factor in pharyngitis, Prof. Dr. Topak said, "Air pollution, smoking, alcohol, spicy spicy foods, very hot-cold foods and drinks are also factors that irritate the throat, but constantly breathing through the mouth due to nasal congestion plays a bigger role in chronic pharyngitis. If acute pharyngitis recurs frequently, it may turn into chronic pharyngitis."

Insufficient sleep can cause pharyngitis!

Noting that many microorganisms can cause pharyngitis, Prof. Dr. Murat Topak gave the following information:

"90% of adult pharyngitis and 60-75% of pediatric pharyngitis are caused by viral factors. Viruses that cause the common cold can also cause pharyngitis as they affect the upper respiratory tract. Bacteria are responsible for 25% of all tonsillopharyngitis. The risk factors for viral upper respiratory tract infections can also be mentioned here: Crowded environments such as kindergartens, classrooms, etc., smoking, malnutrition, chronic diseases, insufficient sleep, stress.
Avoid stuffy environments, wash your hands frequently with soap!

Microorganisms that cause pharyngitis are transmitted through the respiratory tract. Transmission occurs through droplet infection (spreading from the sick person to the surrounding environment with sneezes and coughs, adhering to microparticles in the air and hanging there and then infecting the non-sick person by respiratory tract), direct contact and indirect contact (contact with microorganisms that spread from the sick person to the environment and can remain alive for a while on the surface of the objects and infecting them with the nose, mouth or eyes). For protection:

1.Consider the routes of transmission,
2.Avoid close contact with the sick person,
3.Avoid being in stuffy and crowded environments,
4. Washing hands frequently with soap for 20 seconds, including between fingers and wrists,
5. No smoking,
6.Avoid exposure to cigarette smoke,
7. Attention should be paid to nutrition and adequate sleep."

Lozenges have no curative effect in treatment

Prof. Dr. Murat Topak said, "Antibiotics are not used in acute pharyngitis caused by viruses. However, antibiotics may be recommended in serious infections or in cases where the immune system is very weak."

"In addition to antibiotics, painkillers, antipyretics, antihistamines in patients with allergies, nasal sprays, cough suppressants and mouthwashes with salty carbonated water can be used. Lozenges are usually useless. Chronic pharyngitis is very difficult to treat. Both the doctor should apply treatment and the patient should pay attention to certain conditions. However, chronic pharyngitis often cannot be completely eliminated. In order to determine the treatment, it should be investigated whether there is another factor that causes chronic pharyngitis. If this is found, it must be treated first. Diseases such as allergy, curvature of the nasal bone or hypertrophy of the turbinates in the nose, sinusitis, reflux should be corrected appropriately, if necessary by surgery."
