Neurology is concerned with diseases of the nervous system; psychiatry is concerned with disorders of emotion and behavior arising from the brain; and psychology is concerned with human emotion and behavior. In the early 20th century, psychiatry was first influenced by the predominance of dynamic explanatory tendencies in psychology, and then neurology became reflexology and moved away from the brain. This artificial separation lasted for almost 70 years during the century; however, with the introduction of imaging methods, the grounds for rapprochement between the three emerged again.
Today, neurology continues its rapprochement with behavioral neurology, psychiatry with biological psychiatry, and psychology with experimental and cognitive psychology, with the brain becoming the common ground and area of interest for all of them. This development has reached its ideal ground in Turkey with NP GROUP.
Memory Centers Of America Istanbul Branch Opening
The official opening of MEMORY CENTER OF ISTANBUL, the Turkish branch of Memory Centers of America, took place on May 25, 1999 with the participation of our President. In his speech at the opening ceremony, our 9th President Mr. Süleyman Demirel said the following:
"Dear Guests,
I listened with great interest to the information given by our esteemed scientists. Needless to say, the brain is the most important part of the human being. Mankind has not yet discovered the wisdom of the brain. As an example, to what extent it is true is another matter, but in order to show the importance of the brain, if a computing device were to be built to perform the functions of the brain, it would be necessary to build 3 computing devices the size of the globe.
The brain is the secret of creation. Of course, how much people actually use their brains is another matter. There are people who come into the world and leave the world without using a significant part of their brain at all. Civilization has actually chosen to use the brain more, to make more use of the brain. This is the reason for education.
If ways can be found to protect the memory, which is the most valuable asset of human beings, this will be an important achievement for humanity, especially in a world where the average life expectancy has increased from 40-50 years to 70-80 years. The average life expectancy in our country in the 30s was 35-40 years. Today it has increased to 70-80. In other words, the average life expectancy has more or less doubled. But the way to live this lifespan in a healthy way is to preserve the function of one's limbs, including memory and brain. As we live, as the world becomes more prosperous, I believe that science and technology will bring more beautiful things to the service of people. I even hope that this is the expectation of the rulers and politicians.
I have come here to show that I support such a thing, that I support everything that is for the good of humanity, my belief in science and my support for innovation. I would like to thank our esteemed physicians who brought this Memory Center to Turkey. Prof. Tarhan, Prof. Prof. Tanrıdağ and Prof. Prof. Itil have just informed us. I am sure that you will attract great interest and I wish success to Turkish physicians and world physicians who are in the service of humanity. To the extent that you can save humanity from suffering, the happiness of humanity will be ensured.
I am here to convey these wishes. Be successful. I congratulate you all. Thank you."
Strong Memory Award to Süleyman Demirel
Our 9th President Mr. Süleyman Demirel was given an award by Memory Centers of America for his "Strong Memory". On October 27, 2000, 13 faculty members were presented plaques for their contributions to Neuropsychiatry at a ceremony held at Ankara Dedeman Hotel. Hacettepe University Rector Prof. Dr. Tunç Alp ÖZGEN, E.Tbp.Major General Şerif SABUNCU and Prof. Dr. Ünsal SÖYLEMEZOĞLU from GATA attended the ceremony.
Taking the floor after the panel, Mr. Süleyman DEMİREL said the following:
"Distinguished guests, I would like to thank Prof. Dr. TARHAN, and I would like to thank the Istanbul Memory and Learning Center. Mr. Nevzat TARHAN said that as Memory Centers, while they are looking for people with strong memories, they have also made it their goal to keep the memory strong. They see this as the duty of science.
When the average lifespan of people was 40 years, there might not have been a need for such things. As a matter of fact, the fact that the issues related to the brain that the Memory Center deals with have not come to the attention of medicine for so long is due to the short life expectancy. In our country, while we could not see the maturity of our children, now we can see beyond our grandchildren, in other words, the average life expectancy has increased to over 75 years. This is also important in the increase of the world population to over 6 billion. The increase in life expectancy has caused some problems in old age. Old age and retirement are different things. Retirement is not about earning a pension after working for a certain period of time and then sitting in a corner waiting for providence. Since people have had the opportunity to live for so many years. The important thing is to live these years with peace of mind. Body - soul - mind - memory health is necessary to live with all of them. Today, developed countries called G8s have included the concept of Aging in the Okinawa declaration. And in the millennium declaration, there is also an event called Aging.
We need to protect three things in the elderly: 1) The survival of the Nev, that is, one must sustain oneself. This is done through daily nourishment. 2) Survival of the generation; it will reproduce. 3) Survival of the mind. Mind-memory, these are confused with each other. They are used interchangeably. When we come to what we call the mind, you have explained the science of it. When we talk about the survival of the intellect, I remember a statement of Descartes: "Allah Almighty has given people enough intellect for everyone". Memory is a thing of the past. Let me translate it for young people: Human memory is subject to forgetfulness. He will forget. Forgetting is not such a bad thing. People come into the world naked and leave naked. But this nakedness is physical. He comes naked, but he comes very equipped, and that is the brain."

NPISTANBUL Neuropsychiatric Hospital Opening Ceremony
The official opening of NPISTANBUL Hospital took place on March 20, 2007 with the participation of the Speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly. In his speech at the opening ceremony, Mr. Bülent Arınç said the following:
"Mr. District Governor, Distinguished Members of Parliament, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen, I greet you all with love and wish you a good day.
I am very pleased to be present at the opening of NPISTANBUL Hospital. I am really pleased to be with you at the opening of such a hospital, which I consider very important for Turkey. I am not in a position to say anything from a technical point of view, I am not a physician either, but the services that the hospital will provide and the added value and benefit it will provide to the society were explained very well in the promotional film. As a scientist, Mr. Tarhan also expressed his thoughts. It may have started as a clinic in 1999, but now it has been established as a hospital at the most advanced point in terms of technology with its extraordinary high technical equipment, inpatient treatment, services for children and technology.
It is a hospital that was established to raise the level of well-being of public health and especially the mental health of society. And we need this more than ever. Because
Many events that we see, hear and witness show us that mental health in society is unfortunately deteriorating. It shows us that new types of illnesses are emerging, and the events we encounter astonish us. Starting with those closest to us, we see that many disorders have emerged especially in this century. There is no doubt that the eye is also important, other senses are also important, but mental health is also extremely important. The only way to live life is to have good mental health. We are extremely pleased that a hospital that will provide services in this field has been put into service with a very good physician staff and well-trained personnel.
I think it is also very correct that music therapy will be applied in this hospital. When we look at our history, we see that there were treatment methods through suggestion, music therapy, music therapy, and treatment methods by using water. Therefore, we are faced with a hospital that integrates with the past and wants to apply the beneficial methods of the past with more contemporary methods.
I know Mr. Tarhan both for the books he has written and the educational speeches he has made on television, especially in this field, I congratulate him sincerely and wish him success and I invite you all to applaud Mr. Tarhan.
Dear friends, Turkey is raising very beautiful people. I would like to repeat that I am really honored to be present at the opening of this beautiful and auspicious work in front of this beautiful community. I would like to congratulate Ümraniye for having such a work of art. I would also like to thank the hardworking Mayor and our esteemed District Governor and their esteemed wives for attending this meeting. I wish you all the best. NPISTANBUL Hospital, I wish health and healing to our patients, I wish them to live in health and well-being, I present my respects to all of you.
Thank you."
