What is Septum Deviation (Nasal Curvature)?

What is Septum Deviation (Nasal Curvature)?

The nose is like a tunnel divided into two by a wall in the middle. Deviated septum occurs when the nasal wall in the middle part of the nose shifts and causes nasal congestion in the person. Nasal congestion is among the most obvious symptoms of deviation. This problem may have a connection with the external appearance of the nose. Deviated septum can occur genetically or after a trauma. Deviation treatment is quite easy. There is no bruising and pain in the nose after deviated septum surgery.

In the center of our nose, there is a wall separating the right and left orifice. This wall is called the septum. At the bottom of the septum, there is a structure called concha, another name for the nasal flesh. Conchae help to heat and moisturize the air taken in during nasal breathing. The wall in the middle of the nose is damaged due to various reasons such as genetics, blows received in childhood, growth hormones and does not fit inside the nose and bends to the side. It is a piece of cartilage and bone. This condition is called septum deviation. The patient feels nasal congestion and applies to an otolaryngologist. The patient is examined endoscopically and cartilage curvature and flesh growths in the nose are detected.

What are the Symptoms of Deviated Septum?

The biggest symptomof deviated septum is nasal congestion. After this nasal congestion is detected, sinus tomography is requested from the patient. Thus, all the bones, turbinates and sinuses in the inner part of the nose become visible. Other symptoms of septum deviation problem can be listed as follows;

  • The person sleeps with his mouth open
  • Snoring and dryness in the throat
  • Waking up exhausted and tired
  • Pressure change in the air ears when traveling by airplane
  • Blockage and pain in the ear
  • Pain in the face area
  • Nasal discharge
  • Intense nosebleeds

People withdeviated septum do not constantly suffer from flu infections. However, they have more complaints during the infection and after the infection for a certain period of time. The cause of this condition can be determined by performing nasal examination and endoscopic control together.

How is Deviated Septum Diagnosed?

The diagnosis ofdeviated septum is quite easy. The doctor who will perform the surgery can easily make the diagnosis after analyzing the medical history of the patient well and after a healthy nasal examination.

How is deviated septum treated?

Theseptum deviation treatment process is very important. The patient is intervened with a surgical method called septoplasty . In order to open a wide and comfortable channel in the nose, it is more appropriate to perform the deviation together with submucosal concha resection. Thus, a wide and comfortable canal is opened. The bone wall in the middle of the nose is corrected, the flesh is reduced, the lower parts are burned and recurrence is prevented. However, if sinusitis is detected in the examination or tomography, this operation is performed together with sinus surgery. This surgery is called endoscopic sinus surgery . An endoscope is inserted into the nose, the holes in the sinuses opening into the nose are detected and enlarged and the sinuses are drained. If nasal surgery is not performed, the patient's nose remains blocked.

How is Septum Deviation Surgery Performed?

While this condition does not pose a major problem at a young age, the person may experience significant problems at an advanced age. If the patient has other diseases at an advanced age (blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease), it may be very difficult to perform this surgery in such cases. Therefore, septum deviation surgery is recommended for people who have this problem at an early age.
Septum deviation surgery is quite easy. The recovery period is determined as 1 week after surgery. No tampon is used in the person's nose. The patient's nose is supported with silicones. These silicones are then removed by the specialist. Thus, the person will have a healthy nose that breathes without pain and bruising in the nose.
