What is Flurona? Symptoms and Treatment

The definition of Flurona began to be used after cases of influenza (flu) virus in Israel and the US occurred at the same time as COVID-19. Infection with more than one disease-causing organism is called coinfection. Co-infection is not uncommon. The development of tuberculosis in people infected with HIV, and co-infections with viruses in the previous influenza pandemic were severe and fatal.

An individual having coronavirus and influenza at the same time is referred to as flu. It was formed by the combination of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 and the word flu, which means flu in English. Flurona virus is a clinical condition created by the combination of the words flu (English flu) and Corona. Flurona virus is therefore an incorrect description. Flurona has not yet been designated as a disease or a variant of COVID-19.

What are the symptoms of Flurona?

It is impossible to clearly say whether it is COVID-19, flu or flurona just by looking at the symptoms, the symptoms may be similar. Blocked nose, coughing, pain in the throat, shortness of breath that increases with exertion or difficulty in holding your breath can be shown as flu symptoms, fever, intense body aches, especially joint pain, can also lead to flu. Flurona symptoms can be listed as follows;

  • High fever
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Joint pain
  • Body pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea

How common is Flurona?

Although it is not clear exactly how common flurona is, there are studies that show that both COVID-19 and a positive flu test result are no more than 1%. When COVID-19 is present, the coronavirus will be very effective in the body. Therefore, although there have been cases of both coronavirus and influenza, this association is not expected to occur frequently. With the rising Omicron cases and the onset of flu infection, an increase in cases is expected with the progression of cold weather. With all this, it is not possible to give clear numbers about the incidence of flurona, as it is very unlikely to test for both separately, even in major events that require hospitalization.

How is Flurona Virus Transmitted?

It can be transmitted through small droplets from coughing or sneezing, through the mouth, nose or by contact with places contaminated with these droplets. Coronavirus and influenza germs cause infection in the upper and lower respiratory tract. They have a wide range of symptoms, ranging from mild or moderate infections to severe illness and loss of life.

How is Flurona Virus Treated?

When treating flu, antiviral medications, painkillers and antipyretics are usually prescribed. Antiviral drugs primarily show their effect when taken within 48 hours and it is not correct to prescribe them to individuals who experience every flu. They can be used for high-risk groups. Along with medical treatment, it is important to drink plenty of fluids and rest. Fresh fruits and vegetables should be consumed in large quantities, and natural remedies such as honey, mint, lemon-lime ginger, herbal tea, garlic, onion should also be used. COVID-19 can be mild in many people and supplementary treatment is usually sufficient. In the treatment of COVID-19, oxygen assistance is used for people with severe illness and for those at risk of severe illness. Advanced respiratory support, such as ventilation, is also preferred for people whose disease is at risk. The goal of treatment in hospital is generally to reduce symptoms and allow the individual's immunity to fight the disease. Along with these, nutritional supplements, plenty of rest and fluid consumption are consumed in the treatment of influenza.

What are the ways to prevent Flurona?

Being in close contact with the person infected with COVID-19 and influenza, breathing the same air and being in common areas can easily cause the spread of the disease. Regular ventilation of the areas, wearing a mask with the mouth and nose closed, maintaining social distance, paying attention to cleanliness are effective techniques that people should pay attention to in order to protect themselves from these diseases. In addition to these important points, the risk of infection can be significantly reduced with vaccination in both diseases. Flu vaccinations should also be given due importance, as the symptoms in vaccinated individuals will be significantly milder than in unvaccinated individuals.
