Back to Pain-Free Life with Shoulder Replacement

Persistent chronic pain in shoulders can be debilitating. Neglecting it and underrating its severity can affect badly everyday life and health in general. Joint replacement with orthopaedic prostheses is performed when the pain is unbearable and there is no sufficient non-surgical treatments left.

What Causes Shoulder Pain?

Shoulder pain can be caused by injuries like a rotator cuff tendon or a muscle tear or a complete rupture as well as by osteoarthritis, arthropathy, gout, infections and autoimmune conditions.

When to Visit an Orthopaedic Specialist?

If you experience persistent pain and stiffness in shoulders or pain interrupts your sleep and there is long-lasting shoulder inflammation and swelling that doesn’t get better, it is highly recommended to visit an orthopaedic specialist.

What is a Shoulder Prosthesis?

When all possible nonsurgical and minimal invasive variants of treatments have been tried, but there is no relief, a shoulder replacement surgery is performed, in other words, the damaged tissues are replaced by an artificial shoulder prosthesis. Being an excellent alternative to autogenous tissues, shoulder prostheses are made of special hypoallergenic and safe materials and aim at restoring joint motion and squashing joint inflammation.

Two Main Types of Shoulder Replacement

There are two major shoulder replacement surgeries: partial one is when only a humerus head is being replaced; the other is a reverse shoulder arthroplasty, which is mostly preferred in patients with torn and ruptured rotator cuff tendons, when both the humerus head and the glenoid are replaced by an artificial shoulder prosthesis.

Shoulder Arthroplasty Duration

Generally shoulder replacement surgery takes two hours, in complex cases requiring a revision, it could last a bit longer.

How Long to Stay in Turkey?

Shoulder prosthesis surgery suggests about five days of hospitalisation and at least three weeks of post-operative physical rehabilitation and follow-ups.

Anaesthesia

The surgery is performed in a well-equipped JCI accredited operating theatre under general anaesthesia, therefore, a patient does not experience any discomfort or pain.

Getting Back to Normal Life after Shoulder Replacement

Recovery usually takes several weeks. The overwhelming majority of people, who undergo shoulder replacement surgery, get back to normal activities within a few weeks or a month.

Why Is Rehabilitation Essential after Shoulder Replacement Surgery?

Patients who work hard on physical therapy in general have a better chance to speed up the heeling process and faster return to normal life. Physical therapy and rehabilitation focuses on resuming firstly light activities followed by daily living independently.

Recovery after Shoulder Arthroplasty

In an early post-operative period a physiotherapist will teach you how to strengthen your back muscles, deltoid, biceps and triceps. During this phase heavy objects lifting and intensive physical activity including raising, twisting and bending arms should be avoided.

Weight Lifting after Shoulder Replacement Surgery

Later, when the bone and the joint prosthesis have been melted together, the patient will be able to lift pretty much anything he or she can comfortably lift.

Physical Activity with Shoulder Prosthesis

The patients, who have undergone shoulder replacement, should restrain themselves from intensive shoulder rotating activities. Patients generally return to their physical activity including driving in a month after shoulder arthroplasty.
